Paper Assignment: Visual analysis of an artwork with a thesis focus<\/span><\/span>Select an image of a work in your text<\/span> <\/span>from one of the periods we have discussed in<\/span><\/span>class, or one we will be examining later in the quarter<\/span> <\/span>(see your syllabus). The work<\/span><\/span>does not have to be one I have shown in class. Do not select a work earlier than 1900.<\/span><\/span>Write a<\/span> <\/span>minimum of 4 pages<\/span> <\/span>of text on the work, focusing on the following:<\/span><\/span>1)<\/span> <\/span>Begin with a thesis paragraph<\/span>, and<\/span> <\/span>State your thesis in terms of an argument<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>This is key to the success of your paper (as a general rule, paragraphs must be 3 or<\/span><\/span>more sentences). Begin by telling us the purpose of the paper; mention the artist, title<\/span><\/span>of the work (which must be underlined or italicized), the date, and the period to which<\/span><\/span>the work belongs. Select<\/span> <\/span>one<\/span> <\/span>area of focus for the thesis of the paper–something<\/span><\/span>specific<\/span> <\/span>about the work that you intend to argue (examine, analyze, prove a point<\/span><\/span>about). Then, in the following sentences of your thesis statement, cite the purpose and<\/span><\/span>goal of the paper. After your thesis statement, your visual analysis section should<\/span><\/span>develop into this focused thesis point.<\/span><\/span>Example Thesis Statement<\/span>: \u201cThis essay will conduct a visual analysis of<\/span><\/span>Wassily Kandinsky\u2019s<\/span> <\/span>Composition VII<\/span> <\/span>of 1913, a large painting from Kandinsky\u2019s<\/span><\/span>Blue Rider period, and focus on Kandinsky\u2019s use of color, and its connection to<\/span><\/span>spirituality. As with other early 20<\/span>th<\/span> <\/span>century artists, Kandinsky sought a new and<\/span><\/span>expressive means of engaging color to represent a spiritual content that was free of<\/span><\/span>traditional naturalism and religious iconography.\u201d<\/span><\/span>The thesis focus is color, and its connection to spirituality. Note that the specific<\/span><\/span>focus on color contains an explanation of \u201cwhy,\u201d which is historically verifiable.<\/span><\/span>2) Undertake a concise<\/span> <\/span>visual analysis<\/span>, a careful, detailed description of the work, which<\/span><\/span>proceeds from form to content. The intention is to give the reader a good visual<\/span><\/span>description of the art object. Don\u2019t assume things related to content to be true\u2014you must<\/span><\/span>corroborate statements with evidence from scholarly publications. Be specific about<\/span><\/span>composition\u2014try to avoid generalizations. Define terms! Don\u2019t assume I am the only<\/span><\/span>reader, and know what you will be talking about. For example, if you mention<\/span><\/span>primitivism,<\/span> <\/span>tell the reader what that is.<\/span><\/span>3)<\/span> <\/span>Supporting your argument<\/span> <\/span>(thesis). Proceed from the visual analysis into a narrative<\/span><\/span>examining an aspect of the work (your thesis focus) you found compelling as you<\/span><\/span>consulted scholarly book sources from the Jen Library or appropriate<\/span> <\/span>scholarly<\/span> <\/span>digital<\/span><\/span>archives, such as JSTOR. Certain internet sources are acceptable, as discussed in class.<\/span><\/span>Focus on this thematic aspect, and<\/span> <\/span>use salient quotes or ideas from the sources you<\/span><\/span>consulted to strengthen your concepts or arguments<\/span>. You may want to conclude with<\/span><\/span>a couple of remarks about further exploration into your topic.<\/span><\/div>\n

Form<\/span>: the paper must be typewritten, contain a title, be in black ink, have one-inch<\/span><\/span>margins, be double-spaced, in 12-point font, with numbered pages, must contain foot- or<\/span><\/span>endnotes, and a separate-page bibliography of at least<\/span> <\/span>3<\/span> <\/span>Scholarly<\/span> <\/span>sources<\/span>. Include a<\/span><\/span>photocopy of the work you are writing about after your bibliography at the end of the<\/span><\/span>paper. Please do not cite Khanacademy, Artstory, Wikipedia, or similar generalized sites<\/span><\/span>as sources! Proper citation of sources is a must.<\/span> <\/span>The paper must use Chicago<\/span><\/span>manuscript style.<\/span> <\/span>I recommend that you consult the Barnet book listed on the<\/span><\/span>syllabus for further information regarding writing a visual analysis and proper<\/span><\/span>citation form.<\/span><\/span>A word on the use of quotations: do not use quotations to take the place of your own<\/span><\/span>visual analyses, or to provide very general information about the artist. And please do not<\/span><\/span>have quotations stand on their own as sentences! Quotations need to be placed in the<\/span><\/span>context of your own narrative.<\/span><\/span>*Your paper is due<\/span> <\/span>Thursday February 15, and must be submitted to the first paper<\/span><\/span>submission portal by the end of the day.<\/span> <\/span>Papers shorter than the required length will be<\/span><\/span>marked down considerably.
