At MU Extension transformative learning is a key element in all
\nprogramming efforts. Specialists who deliver education seek the
\nexperiences of those attending as a source of peer education for the
\nclass. Extension classes are typically geared towards adults to enhance
\nor improve already established goals. Further, research is often
\nsimultaneously being conducted by participants to see what is working
\nand not helpful for a variety of educational topics. <\/p>\n

Within the many subject areas covered through extension education,
\nembodied, spiritual, and narrative all occur. For example, Taking Care
\nof You is a well-being class designed to improve overall well-being and
\nstress management. Participants are encouraged to share and explore
\nspiritual practices as a core element of increasing well-being. In many
\nagriculture classes narrative learning often takes place or is more
\nfocused. <\/p>\n

In every extension class, it is expected and encouraged that personal
\n experiences be shared to create an atmosphere of shared education that
\nwill enrich the educational experience for all. <\/p>\n

As
\n an adult trainer I would aim to establish a learning environment among
\nmy trainees and myself where the trainees\u2019 experiences, reflection and
\nnarrative guided and informed the learning. Experience is one of the key
\n concepts of transformative learning (p. 182). Each participant brings
\nwith them their own personal repository of experiences, collected
\nthrough their daily work lives as well as previous educational
\nattainment and social interactions. These experiences would not only
\ninform individual participants\u2019 own learning, but could also prove to be
\n valuable education for the entire group.  I would ask participants to
\nreflect critically upon their own experiences to determine their
\nlearning goals in an effort to enrich the overall learning experience of
\n the group.<\/p>\n

Narrative
\n learning is learning through stories (p. 257) and by relaying and
\nsharing their stories adults would have a direct impact upon the
\nlearning experience for everyone, including myself as the trainer. By
\nencouraging participants to draw from their experiences and share them,
\nas they were comfortable doing so, each participant would be acting as a
\n co-trainer. Through these activities of reflecting on and sharing each
\nother\u2019s experiences the group would be engaging in transformational
\nlearning and forming a community of practice (p. 222) where the
\ncollective knowledge of the group becomes greater than the initial
\nknowledge base of each additional learner.<\/p>\n
