Overview<\/span>
The first section of this course explores the Enlightenment, especially the rational and scientific<\/span>
interpretation of evidence. We link this idea that evidence can be interpreted accurately and<\/span>
consistently to ideas generated during the Enlightenment. Your paper should evaluate whether<\/span>
Enlightenment principles were violated in two current controversies. You can<\/span> <\/span>choose<\/span> <\/span>two of the<\/span>
controversies I provide. To be clear, you should<\/span> <\/span>not<\/span>
spend the bulk of your paper showing how each and every Enlightenment value (<\/span>transparency,<\/span>
method, objectivity, skepticism, and competition<\/span>) was violated in both controversies. You<\/span>
should emphasize the few Enlightenment values from this longer list that you can convincingly<\/span>
argue were violated the most. Concentrate on a few overall questions:<\/span>
1.<\/span> <\/span>Were<\/span> <\/span>different<\/span> <\/span>Enlightenment values violated in each controversy? If so, why?<\/span>
2.<\/span> <\/span>If analysts and decision-makers had followed specific Enlightenment values more<\/span>
closely, would the outcomes have changed?<\/span>
Research<\/span>
Students may find it necessary to do some outside research on the Enlightenment period, the<\/span>
controversies you choose, or two of the controversies I provide. If you choose two of your own<\/span>
controversies, then you\u2019ll need to base your conclusions on expert sources.<\/span> <\/span>To be clear, your job<\/span>
is not simply to summarize these or other essays about controversies, but to integrate these<\/span>
articles, podcasts, or documentaries into your take on how people arrived at incorrect<\/span>
conclusions in these controversies.<\/span> <\/span>In short, don\u2019t just report on what you find in your research;<\/span>
use this research to help build your case about these larger controversies.<\/span>
In general, your paper should include the following<\/span>:<\/span>
1.<\/span> <\/span>A clear structure with a memorable thesis, organized main points, and a conclusion.<\/span>
Think through the key organizational issue of whether you want to organize main points<\/span>
around a few Enlightenment values and discuss how they were violated in each<\/span>
controversy<\/span> <\/span>or<\/span> <\/span>whether you want your discussion of each controversy to serve as two<\/span>
main points.<\/span>
2.<\/span> <\/span>A discussion of how your chosen controversies did or did not violate Enlightenment<\/span>
values.<\/span>
3.<\/span> <\/span>A discussion of whether there are clear differences in how each controversy violated<\/span>
Enlightenment principles. (This may help you generate a specific thesis.)<\/span>
