\nDescription: An expository essay is a type of writing \u201cthat requires the student to investigate an
\nidea, evaluate evidence, expound on the idea, and set forth an argument concerning that idea
\nin a clear and concise manner\u201d (\u201cExpository Essays\u201d). In the essay, the writer will examine the
\ntopic using different strategies that will enable the audience to understand the topic. Some of
\nthe strategies may include comparing and contrasting, describing, defining or classifying items
\nwith similarities and differences. To investigate the topic, you will need to find references, no
\nmore and no less than three, that enable you to support your idea.
\nTo draft your expository essay, here are the sections and what they should contain:
\nIntroduction \u2013 In the introduction, you\u2019ll 1) explain the issue or topic and provide your
\nthesis, which will identify the purpose (your position on the issue) of the topic
\nfor your short expository research paper. You\u2019ll 2) provide background information
\n(briefly explaining the history of the issue) and briefly 3) identify what individual points
\nor ideas you\u2019ll examine.
\n(Unlike a typical argument essay, in your expository essay, you\u2019ll examine the topic
\n(narrowed) without focusing solely on one side of it.)
\nBody Paragraphs \u2013 In this section, you\u2019ll provide 1) background information on the
\ntopic, so the reader will understand it. This doesn\u2019t have to be long for such a short
\nassignment. You\u2019ll then discuss 2) your points or ideas on the paper topic within
\nseparate paragraphs, and you\u2019ll provides examples to help the reader understand the
\npoints and evidence from your references that support the points you make. Keep in
\nmind that you\u2019ll examine any alternative ideas or opposition to your points to assure the
\naudience understands the narrowed topic fully.
\nConclusion \u2013 Just as with any other conclusion, you\u2019ll restate the topic and reemphasize
\nyour discoveries. You don\u2019t want your conclusion to be a copy of the introductory
\nparagraph. Instead, you want to place emphasis on your supporting details (\u201cExpository
\nEssay\u201d).
\nTopic: Choose a topic you find interesting and that you believe your audience would find
\ninteresting. If you can\u2019t think of a topic to write about, you can choose one of the following
\ntopics:
\n1. There are some people in the world today who don\u2019t believe in climate change. In light of the
\nevidence, why might they doubt the information presented?
\n2. What is the COVID-19 virus and where did it originate?
\n3. The United States has two major political parties, Republicans and Democrats. What are
\nsome of the differences and similarities in their beliefs? (Stick to three elements.)
\nAudience: Classmates, instructor, and others interested in the particular area of research you
\nchoose.
\nStyle\/Format: In writing the expository essay, you will discuss the subject in third person. Avoid
\nusing first and second person (I, me, we, us or you).
\nBe sure to document (cite) your research using the Modern Languages Association
\nHandbook style for both in-text and works cited page citations. Also, double-spaced with
\nmargins of at least one-inch on all sides and follow the MLA paper format.

\nprotection.
