The focus of this assignment is Heidegger’s Being and Time. We have discussed the philosophy of this book “from within” but also paying attention to the connections between the philosophical argument of Being and Time and Heidegger’s Nazism. In places we have also looked at the insights about Nazism and the human possibility of the Holocaust that this book yields. Again, this is not the conventional reading of Being and Time and there is room to make the case that the book and its argument have nothing to do with either Nazism or Heidegger’s support for it.<\/div>\n

Is there a connection between the philosophy of Being Time and Nazism\/Heidegger’s support for Nazism? If so, what is that connection? How do you understand the significance of it?<\/div>\n

– “the they” or Das Man.<\/div>\n
– the devouring nature of Dasein’s being (both in terms of space and time) and the concept of lebensraum. Also the connection between this and the attunements of fear, terror and anxiety.<\/div>\n
– the struggle against inauthenticity and the preference for a notion of Dasein’s authenticity that comes face to face with its being-toward-death<\/div>\n
– the delusional nature of Dasein in both its inauthentic and authentic forms<\/div>\n
– the separation of authentic truth and conscience from their normative moral meanings<\/div>\n
– the totality or totalitarian nature of Dasein’s care for the world<\/div>\n
– the need for resoluteness and the desire to engage with fear and to have a conscience about mortality<\/div>\n
