The film Stray Dog by
\nAkira Kurosawa perfectly represents a prot\u00e9g\u00e9\/mentor relationship. The film is
\nfocused on a rookie detective named Murakami and the journey to find his stolen
\ngun. When the case is first assigned to Murakami, he experiences frequent
\nfrustration until he is given a partner, a more experienced detective named
\nSato. Sato can control some of Murakami’s impulsiveness throughout the
\ninvestigation and, over time, teaches him better interrogative skills. In an
\nanalysis by Patrick McCoy, he argues that “the film is a simple detective
\nfilm on one level. But the film’s subtext suggests criticism of society’s
\neconomic divisions that force some individuals to turn to crime to survive or
\nfrom sheer desperation.” However, the movie goes beyond the surface of a
\nsimple detective film. McCoy’s analysis focuses on the prot\u00e9g\u00e9\/mentor idea
\nbetween a seasoned veteran and rookie officer. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The movie’s plot is
\ndeveloped around three characters: Murakami (rookie detective), Sato (veteran
\ndetective), and Yusa (the criminal). Murakami must navigate the streets of
\nTokyo to look for his missing colt, which is almost impossible given his
\nlimited experience in the field. The mentor\/prot\u00e9g\u00e9 relationship begins when
\nSato is assigned as Murakami’s partner; Sato as a mentor is highlighted through
\nhis experience and resilience, while Murakami’s as a prot\u00e9g\u00e9 is portrayed
\nthrough his limited knowledge and cluelessness. Despite Murakami’s clumsy and
\nimpulsive nature, Sato recognizes his potential and takes him under his wing;
\nhis role as a mentor is not only highlighted by his investigative experience
\nbut also through the moral guidance he offers Murakami. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Sato is calm and relaxed
\nin his investigation skills to guide Murakami in the search for the pistol. The
\ninexperience of Murakami is depicted through growing anxiety, shame, and his
\nreactionary behavior that impedes the investigation. Throughout the movie, Sato
\nis dedicated to turning him into an excellent detective and changing his
\nreactionary behavior to help improve his skills. Sato’s mentorship is subtle;
\nhe only delivers some things to Murakami. Murakami has to observe, analyze, and
\nlearn from different scenarios to navigate the various scenarios he faces.
\nArguably, detective work requires an officer to be calm in all scenarios, an
\nattribute that Murakami lacks; he possesses an aggressive attribute in contrast
\nto Sato, an attribute that he tries to instill in him in the efforts of making
\nhim an effective officer. This is evident in the scene where Sato’s calm
\ndemeanor and insightful questioning techniques help collect meaningful
\ninformation to track the antagonist, unlike Murakami’s aggressive approach. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In addition to instilling
\ntechnical mentorship, the mentor\/prot\u00e9g\u00e9 relationship and story is emboldened
\nthrough Sato investing moral knowledge in Murakami, which serves as a moral
\ncompass to Murakami by asserting the significance of following the law during
\nthe investigation, even in the face of violence. Similarly, his forgiving
\nnature and clear distinction between good and evil guide Murakami, shaping him
\ninto a moral detective. During the investigation, Sato invites Murakami to his
\nhome. As they work, he explains to him the complexities of law enforcement and
\ndetective work, specifically, the interrogation process, which he struggled
\nwith due to his assertive nature. Sato explains why the questioning process is
\ncomplicated and an aggressive approach to interrogating suspects never works,
\nwhich Murakami then begins to understand. This scene is the epitome of a
\nmentor\/prot\u00e9g\u00e9 relationship because Sato serves as a guide to Murakami in
\nvarious aspects of the law. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Kurosawa’s Stray Dog is a
\nperfect example of the prot\u00e9g\u00e9\/mentor relationship between two detectives, Murakami,
\nand Sato, as they journey to find Murakami’s stolen colt. Sato teaches him
\ndifferent techniques that will help him in future investigations and shape his
\nmoral compass along the way.
