The purpose of the article critique assignment is to strengthen your skills at critically assessing<\/span>
the literature. An assigned article will be given, and students will provide a 1-2 page single-<\/span>
spaced critique of the article. Two article critique assignments will be given during the semester.<\/span>
Questions are listed below each section to guide your critiques (you do not have to answer every<\/span>
single question). They are mainly to help. The article critique assignment is 4 parts:<\/span>
I.<\/span> <\/span>Article Summary<\/span>
Provide a brief, one to two paragraph summary of the article.<\/span>
Questions to consider:<\/span>
1.<\/span> <\/span>What is the purpose of the research?<\/span>
2.<\/span> <\/span>What are the research questions\/hypotheses?<\/span>
3.<\/span> <\/span>What study design was used?<\/span>
4.<\/span> <\/span>What sampling methodology was used?<\/span>
5.<\/span> <\/span>What are the main, overall results?<\/span>
6.<\/span> <\/span>What limitations are stated?<\/span>
7.<\/span> <\/span>What are the main overall conclusions or recommendations the researchers state?<\/span>
II.<\/span> <\/span>Article Strengths<\/span>
Write one to two paragraphs on the article\u2019s strengths.<\/span>
Questions to consider:<\/span>
1.<\/span> <\/span>What are the strengths of the article\u2019s introduction and research questions? Do they fill an<\/span>
important research gap? Are they relevant to the field?<\/span>
2.<\/span> <\/span>What are the strengths of the article\u2019s study design, methodology, or sampling strategy?<\/span>
Are novel techniques used? Is a strong study design employed?<\/span>
3.<\/span> <\/span>What are the strengths of the article\u2019s results and discussion section? Are the results<\/span>
presented in a clear manner? Are graphs or charts utilized? Do the researchers make<\/span>
strong recommendations? Are implications for the field strong?<\/span>
III.<\/span> <\/span>Article Weaknesses<\/span>
Write one to two paragraphs on the article\u2019s weaknesses. You can organize this in the<\/span>
same order the article is written (i.e., discuss weaknesses in the introduction, then the<\/span>
methods, etc.), or you may organize it by discussing the most important weaknesses<\/span>
first and the least important weaknesses last.<\/span>
Questions to consider:<\/span>
1.<\/span> <\/span>What are the weaknesses in the introduction? Are the research questions not explicitly<\/span>
stated?<\/span><\/p>\n

2.<\/span> <\/span>Could a better study design have been utilized? Are the authors lacking their description<\/span>
of the study design, sampling methodology, and data analysis? Could other statistical<\/span>
techniques be employed?<\/span>
3.<\/span> <\/span>Are results unclear? Are tables unorganized? Do the researchers not highlight important<\/span>
results?<\/span>
4.<\/span> <\/span>What major limitations are discussed that you consider weaknesses of the article? What<\/span>
limitations in the discussion section are missing or not discussed?<\/span>
5.<\/span> <\/span>Are recommendations or conclusions lacking? Are there other implications that aren\u2019t<\/span>
discussed? Did researchers \u201cover reach\u201d regarding their results and conclusions?<\/span>
IV.<\/span> <\/span>Article Critique Discussion<\/span>
The purpose of the article critique discussion is to promote conversation around the<\/span>
articles and to share ideas about strengths, weaknesses, and other general<\/span>
observations about the article.<\/span>
Each student is responsible for posting either a response or discussion question for each article.<\/span>
The discussions will be open at 8:00 a.m. on the Monday before the article critique is due, and<\/span>
the discussions will be closed at 11:59 p.m. on Sunday when the article critique is due.<\/span>
The instructor will post several questions for each article that the student can respond to. Or, the<\/span>
student can create their own discussion question. Students are only graded for posting one<\/span>
response; however, students are encouraged to respond more than once if they wish.<\/span>
Some examples of questions the instructor may post include:<\/span>

self-report. What other ways would have been useful to measure COPD in this<\/span>
