I am a social epidemiologist, which means that I study societal conditions and the pathways by which they affect health. I want to know what factors in society make people sick and why some groups are more likely to be healthier than others. We will explore these topics in this class. For example, people of color, individuals in the queer community, and people of lower socioeconomic status are more likely than others to suffer some chronic diseases and mental health problems. Further, in general, women are expected to live longer lives than men. These are just a few of the many types of health disparities that we will discuss in this class. Before you learn about these conditions and disparities in detail, I would like for you to tell me what you think some of the main reasons for these health disparities are. Why do certain groups of people live longer, healthier lives than others?
