Now that you have learned the importance, the challenges, and opportunities of building
respectful and inclusive communities, you will start by researching communities that
have been successful in building respectful and inclusive communities.
You will study them, learn what they have done to be successful, and create your own
vision of how you would build a respectful and inclusive community in your town, your
workplace, your school, or any community that is important to you. Think about this \u2013 if
you could create any respectful and inclusive community that you wanted, what would it
be? What would it look like? Who would you be helping\/including? How does the
research you have done help you to imagine it\/create it?
For example, if you wanted to build a respectful and inclusive community in your sports
team, or if you wanted to start a business that is known for being a respectful and
inclusive community, or if you going to be a teacher and want to build a respectful
community in your classroom, based on the research you have conducted, and what
you learned in class, how might you do it? Who are you including? How is your project
going to do this?
The paper will have the following sections:
1. Introduction (What is this paper about? Why is your community important?
2. Research (What have you discovered in your research that will help you build
your community?)
3. Application (How are you going to take what you have learned from the research
and create your own respectful and inclusive community?)
Instructions:
For this paper you will prepare for your research in the following ways:
1. Read chapters 5, 6, 7 in your textbook Essential Writing Skills for College and
Beyond, Pre-research, research, and post-research.
2. Brainstorm topic ideas, do some preliminary research in your area of interest
(See Ch. 5 in your textbook on Pre-Research). Prepare your research
questions. Write key words. Use the library for your preliminary research.
You may also use Google Scholar.
3. Check with your professor to make sure you are on the right track.
4. Make sure you clearly understand in-text citations and how to format
references on your reference page (You should know this by now, but a
refresher is always good).

5. Finalize your research question and topic for your paper and start your
research (See Ch. 6 in your textbook on how to conduct Research). Use the
Flagler College Library to conduct most of your research. You MUST include<\/a><\/a>at minimum 3 Academic (Scholarly) Journal Articles and 3 other types of
publications such as books, newspaper articles, doctoral dissertations, and
other reliable sources of information including some websites. Do not include
blogs, Wikipedia, or sources where you cannot validate the reliability of the
information. Talk to your librarian. Use the Writing Center if you need help.
6. Write your first draft! Be careful to check format, spelling, punctuation,
grammar, word usage (see Chapter 8 & 9 in your textbook).
Use the checklist!
Format:
6 pages \u2013 1500 words (min.) Double spaced, 12-point font. You must submit six pages,
1500 words plus the Works Cited Page.
Remember! There are three steps to each writing project: Draft (If you do not submit a
draft on time, in Canvas, you will receive a 0 for the draft.
