The cold war had lasted for over three decades, creating fear of Communism corrupting the United States. At the same time the U.S. was struggling with high inflation and uneven economic growth. In addition to the already low morale in the U.S., on November 4, 1979 Iranian students captured the embassy and detained over 50 Americans taking them as hostages. They remained as prisoners during the run up to the Winter Olympics, and they remained there for over 400 days.
