Format Conventions:
1. Summary Introduction. Open the paper with a summary introduction that tell readers what
questions you discuss, what your argument will be, how that argument builds on or takes issue with
current scholarship, what is new about their research or argument, and why it matters. You should
generally deal with these topics in the introduction:
a) What questions to you deal with?
b) Why and how have these questions arisen?
c) What answers do you offer?
d) Do you apply, refine, or reject an important theory in the field? If you reject and accepted theory,
do you offer one in its place?
e) Do you consult new sources?
f) Do you consult accepted sources but arrived at radically different conclusions?
g) Does your conclusion settle outstanding theoretical or historical questions?
h) Do they mandate the rethinking of basic issues?
i) Do they suggest certain policy choices or areas for further research?
Presentation: Please bear in mind the following points when writing the paper.
1. Organize your paper to include an introduction, body, and conclusion. Headings and sub-headings
are highly recommended.
3. Pose your question and state your argument or thesis early on in the essay.
4. Do not stray into historical narration for its own sake; use historical fact only as needed to defend
your position.
5. Eliminate all superfluous information.
6. Use footnotes to document all quotes and all supporting evidence.
Tone: Please do not dismiss opposing points of view out of hand. Admit to flaws or weaknesses in
your argument. Do not conflate fact and opinion.
Style: Please use a consistent writing style. Avoid jargon, colloquialisms, unfamiliar words, unusual
constructions, and foreign phrases. Consult a well-recognized manual or writing guide to confirm
correct usage and accepted convention.Names: Please indicate the full name of all persons the first time they are mentioned in the paper.
Suggestions:
1. Read widely in order to gain a broad picture of the subject.
2. Analyze the subject thoroughly. Good analysis is the cornerstone of essay preparation.
3. Return to the readings and search for information that deals specifically with
the given topic. Take notes and record each source of information by title, author, and page number
in order to incorporate the citations into the text and your bibliography.
4. Prepare a rough draft or an outline before you begin writing the essay.
5. Concentrate on principles, concepts, and the broad themes that unite the elements.
Emphasize comprehensiveness, analysis, and synthesis.
6. Prepare as many drafts as time permits. Remember: good writing means rewriting.
7. The conclusion should focus directly on the questions and concerns stated in the topic, and should
flow logically from the preceding material. Before producing the final draft, examine the conclusion
critically with the essay topic firmly in mind to ensure that you have answered the question posed at
the outset of the paper.
