Prompt : On page 5 of \u201cLetter from a Birmingham Jail,\u201d Martin Luther King, Jr. writes: \u201cIn no sense do I advocate evading or defying the law… I submit that an individual who breaks a law that conscience tells him is unjust and who willingly accepts the penalty of imprisonment in order to arouse the conscience of the community over its injustice, is in reality expressing the highest respect for the law\u201d (5). Here, King is presumably referring to himself and to other participants in the Birmingham campaign. When King says such individuals express \u201crespect for the law,\u201d do you think he is talking about the laws of the United States government in 1963? If yes, why? If no, what law do you think he is referring to? You should refer to \u201cLetter from a Birmingham Jail\u201d in your answer but are also encouraged to draw on \u201cLoving Your Enemies,\u201d if you wish.
