NB: To restate the argument of the text <i style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">in your own words<\/i> means that you should only use quotes from the text sparingly, and when absolutely crucial. But you should still cite (parenthetically) the page of the text where you specific ideas from. Whenever you paraphrase something specifically, show where you are getting the idea from textually. This is a form of evidence; it strengthens your argument.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><br style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><\/p>\n<ol style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">\n<li style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">The second purpose is to <b style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">analyze the article<\/b>. This should take approx. 30% of your paper. In order to do this you must take a step back from the argument made and ask questions of it and the author. Some examples of analytic questions that it might be pertinent to ask are the following:<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">\n<li style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><\/span>To whom is the author speaking\/writing?<\/li>\n<li style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><\/span>What is motivating the author? Why does he\/she want to convince you of X?<\/li>\n<li style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><\/span>What is the author\u2019s starting point? What do they presuppose or assume?<\/li>\n<li style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><\/span>What is the genre of the text (sermon, letter, journal article, etc.)?<span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><\/span>What is the theoretical framework of the study? What counts as evidence?<\/li>\n<li style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><\/span>What kind of evidence is provided?<span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<ul style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">\n<li style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><\/span>Supporting<span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><\/span>Countering<span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<li style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><\/span>What are the implications of this argument, beyond the text? How does it connect to theories, ideas, texts, questions we\u2019ve been introduced to in the class?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><i style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">NB: you will not have space to answer all of these so decide which one\u2019s are the most important in each case.<\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><i style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><\/i><br style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><\/p>\n<ol style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">\n<li style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">Once you have completed that task, then <b style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">evaluate the text\u2019s claim and argument<\/b>. Is it convincing? What are its strengths and weakness? Are there inconsistencies in logic, or gaps in the argument? Are there underlying assumptions with which you disagree?
