In this assignment, you will craft an <\/span>outline<\/strong> <\/span>for an essay that compares the relative merits of two lenses  for understanding the origin and nature of mass incarceration: the race\/drug lens and the class lens. By \u201clense\u201d I mean \u201cexplanation\u201d or \u201ctheory\u201d<\/p>\n

So, again, you are <\/span>NOT<\/span> <\/span>writing the essay here.  You are writing the <\/span>OUTLINE<\/span> <\/span>for that essay.<\/p>\n

Here is the essay question:<\/p>\n

Which of the two lenses provides a more accurate understanding of the nature and causes of mass incarceration and (far more importantly) <\/span>how and why<\/strong>?<\/em><\/h1>\n

The essay question does require understanding the readings, so be sure to ask me questions if any portion of the readings confuse you.<\/p>\n

Likewise, be careful to distinguish between when the author is making their own argument and when they are summarizing the arguments others in order to criticize them (something we discussed a lot on the Perrussal questions).<\/p>\n

So, for example, in the last three paragraphs of p. 47 in <\/span>Locked In, <\/em>Pfaff summarizes three reasons OTHERS have presented for disparities in drug sentencing.  He\u2019s not arguing on that page that any of those are accurate.  So, quoting a portion of that paragraph as something Pfaff has demonstrated (or even THINKS) as true would be <\/span>inaccurate<\/span>.<\/p>\n

This outline (and, eventually, essay), must make use of direct quotations from the readings so far.<\/p>\n

You must have in your outline:<\/p>\n

A) at least three (3) <\/span>relevant<\/span> <\/span>quotations from <\/span>Race to Incarcerate <\/span><\/em>on the origins<\/span> <\/span>of mass incarceration according to the race\/drug lens.<\/p>\n

B) at least  two (2) <\/span>relevant<\/span> <\/span>quotations from <\/span>Race to Incarcerate <\/span><\/em>on the \u201cpunitive response\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

C) At least three (3) <\/span>relevant<\/span> <\/span>quotations from <\/span>The Thirteenth<\/em> <\/span>on what drove mass incarceration after the 1960s<\/span><\/p>\n

D) At least four (4) <\/span>relevant<\/span> <\/span>quotations from Pfaff\u2019s <\/span>Locked In<\/em><\/p>\n

E) At least three (3) <\/span>relevant<\/span> <\/span>quotations from \u201cMass Incarceration: New Jim Crow, Class War, Or Both\u201d<\/p>\n

F) At least three (3) <\/span>relevant <\/span><\/span>quotations from <\/span>The Economic Origins of Mass Incarceration <\/span><\/em>reading.<\/p>\n

(TOTAL OF 18 DIRECT QUOTATIONS)<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n

(Of course, since this is an outline, you\u2019ll be putting those quotations WITHIN an outline that specifies each claim; see example below.  <\/span>DO NOT GIVE ME A LIST OF QUOTATIONS<\/span>; instead, attach those pieces of evidence to each of your claims in your outline)<\/p>\n

Some requirements for the STRUCTURE of this essay (and hence of the outline)<\/p>\n

A) Do *NOT<\/em> <\/span>* <\/span><\/span><\/strong>organize your essay around the sources (that is, first discussing one source, then then next, and so on). <\/span>INSTEAD<\/em>, organize your essay around themes, such as \u201cThe Role of the War on Drugs in mass incarceration.\u201d <\/span>You will likely have five or six themes<\/span><\/p>\n

B) You must have a two to three-sentence thesis that address the entirety of your essay and that provides a specific road map of the essay\u2019s argument and where it will go.<\/p>\n

Some requirements for the <\/span>OUTLINE<\/strong><\/p>\n

This outline will differ from outlines you may have done in high school. Your outline should be a series of <\/span>CLAIMS<\/strong> <\/span><\/span>and <\/span>EVIDENCE<\/strong><\/span> <\/span>that takes the form of direct quotations.<\/p>\n

So, here\u2019s how a section from the middle of such an outline might look:<\/p>\n
