Here are some suggestions for aspects of the text that
\nyou can examine: <\/span><\/p>\n

1.     <\/span><\/span><\/span>Try
\nand place yourself in the mind of the author: What is their purpose<\/b>? Who
\nwould their intended <\/b>or ideal audience<\/b> be? Do you think you<\/i>
\nare the intended audience for the author? 
\n<\/span>How does this affect your response to the article? <\/span><\/p>\n

2.     <\/span><\/span><\/span>What
\nare the underlying values<\/b> and assumptions<\/b> held by the author (the
\ntechnical term sometimes used for these in rhetorical analysis is \u201centhymemes<\/b>\u201d)?
\nDo you agree with these underlying values and assumptions? <\/span><\/p>\n

3.     <\/span><\/span><\/span>Does
\nthe author consider counterarguments<\/b> to their position? How successfully
\ndo they respond to these counterarguments? <\/span><\/p>\n

4.     <\/span><\/span><\/span>Does
\nthe author ever contradict<\/b> their position? How does this affect your
\nresponse to the article? <\/span><\/p>\n

5.     <\/span><\/span><\/span>How
\ndoes the author negotiate tensions<\/b> inherent in the topic? How does this affect
\nyour reading of the article?<\/span><\/p>\n

6.     <\/span><\/span><\/span>Consult
\nthe list of rhetorical terms<\/b> (posted to Moodle)\u2014do you find any of these
\nrhetorical elements in the article? How do they contribute to your response to
\nthe article?<\/span><\/p>\n

7.     <\/span><\/span><\/span>Consult
\nthe list of logical fallacies <\/b>(posted to Moodle) \u2014do you find any of
\nthese logical fallacies in the article? How do they contribute to your response
\nto the article?<\/span><\/p>\n

8.     <\/span><\/span><\/span>According
\nto Aristotle, an appeal to logos<\/b> (or logic) is a fundamental element of
\nrhetoric. What do you understand by an appeal to logic<\/b>, <\/b>and how
\nsuccessfully, according to you, does the author make an appeal to logic in the
\narticle?<\/span><\/p>\n

9.     <\/span><\/span><\/span>According
\nto Aristotle, an appeal to pathos (or emotion)<\/b> is a fundamental element

\nHow does that comparison affect your interpretation of the article?<\/span><\/p>\n

19.  <\/span><\/span><\/span>Think
\nof your own views<\/b> on the topic of the article before<\/b> you read the
\narticle? Have those views changed<\/b>? Why or why not?<\/span><\/p>\n

20.  <\/span><\/span><\/span>Look
\nover the Pre-Writing questions posted to Moodle. Do they provide ideas for your
\npoints to discuss in the response essay?<\/span><\/p>\n

21.  <\/span><\/span><\/span>If
\nyou had the chance to ask the author 3 questions<\/b> about the article, what
\nwould those questions be? How do you think the author might respond?<\/span><\/p>\n

You do not <\/b>have to answer every question above.
\nOnly pick those questions\/aspects that are of interest to you and to which you
\ncan do justice within the word count (below). <\/span><\/p>\n

These questions should only serve as a springboard for
\nfurther thought and reflection\u2014not as an exhaustive checklist. You must also
\nconsult class notes, and the various resources posted to Moodle for more ideas.

Common Errors that Students Make:<\/span><\/u><\/p>\n

1.     <\/span><\/span><\/span>Not
\ndrawing upon the concepts and approaches of rhetorical analysis and instead
\nsimply discussing the article in a non-academic, conversational fashion. <\/span><\/p>\n

2.     <\/span><\/span><\/span>Simply
\npresenting your ideas on the topic without any reference to\/or with minimal
\nreference to the article. <\/span><\/p>\n

3.     <\/span><\/span><\/span>Simply
\nsummarizing or paraphrasing the article instead of providing a rhetorical
\nanalysis of it. <\/span><\/p>\n

4.     <\/span><\/span><\/span>Not
\nsubstantiating your point with a specific example\/quotation from the article. <\/span><\/p>\n

5.     <\/span><\/span><\/span>Jumping
\ntoo quickly from one point to the next without fully explaining the point or
\nexploring its implications.<\/span><\/p>\n

6.     <\/span><\/span><\/span>Not
\nexplaining the rationale behind a particular point that you make.  <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

7.     <\/span><\/span><\/span>Straying
\noff topic. <\/span><\/p>\n

8.     <\/span><\/span><\/span>Repeating
\nthe same point several times in the essay. <\/span><\/p>\n

\npoint you are making using a clear topic sentence<\/b>. Link your ideas
\ntogether using strong transitional<\/b> and signal phrases<\/b>. Any
\nquotation from the article must be placed in quotation marks<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n
