In your 1st paragraph briefly introduce your topic.<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

This paragraph can be very short, a few sentences in which introduce the topic of your essay and your main claims (i.e. regarding what Locke would say and whether you agree with this). <\/span><\/p>\n

Feel free to use the first person \u201cI\u201d in formulating your essay.  For example, \u201cIn this short essay I will discuss\u2026 and explain\u2026\u201d etc.<\/span><\/p>\n

In your 2nd<\/sup> <\/span>paragraph describe Locke\u2019s account of the original acquisition of property.<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Here be sure to describe how Locke thinks persons come to acquire initially acquire property, what restrictions this process must abide by, and what principles justify initial acquisition of property for Locke. <\/span><\/p>\n

In your 3rd<\/sup> <\/span>paragraph apply Locke\u2019s account to the hypothetical case described in the essay question.  <\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Here be sure to say whether, according to Locke, the pharmaceutical company would have legitimately acquired property rights in the vaccine, and whether the U.S. government would violate rights of self-ownership, or undermine incentives, or act unfairly in taking the vaccine with compensation. <\/span><\/p>\n

In your 4th <\/span><\/sup>paragraph develop and defend your own position regarding the hypothetical case. <\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Here be sure to clearly state our own view about the whether the U.S. government would act morally rightly in the hypothetical case.<\/span><\/p>\n

Also, be sure to defend your view, say why this taking would be right or wrong, etc.<\/span><\/p>\n

And, be sure to situate your defense in relation to Locke\u2019s position.  Do you agree with aspects of Locke\u2019s position? Disagree? Why?<\/span><\/p>\n

In your 5th<\/sup> <\/span>paragraph briefly conclude.<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

            <\/span><\/span><\/b>This paragraph can be very brief, 1 or 2 sentences.<\/span><\/p>\n

Do NOT number your paragraphs or include the assignment questions in your answer.  Your assignment should read like an essay, with appropriate transitions between paragraphs.  For example, you may want to the second paragraph with:  \u201cSo, let\u2019s first say describe Locke\u2019s account of the original acquisition of property.\u201d<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Each paragraph of the assignment will count for a portion of the final grade, as follows:<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

1st<\/sup> <\/span>paragraph \u2013 5%<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

2nd<\/sup>, 3rd<\/sup>, and 4th<\/sup> <\/span>paragraphs \u2013 30% each<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Completeness:  <\/span><\/span><\/b>Be sure to answer each aspect of the questions asked.<\/span><\/p>\n

Accuracy:  <\/span><\/span><\/b>Be sure to accurately explain Locke\u2019s position. <\/span><\/p>\n

Organization:  <\/span><\/span><\/b>Your essay follow the 5 paragraph structure outlined above.<\/span><\/p>\n

Clarity:  <\/span><\/span><\/b>Your ideas should be clearly expressed and the reader should be able to easily follow your train of thought.  Avoid convoluted sentences.  Write concisely. <\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Grammar:  <\/span><\/span><\/b>Your essay should contain no grammar or spelling mistakes.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Length:  <\/span><\/span><\/b>The assignment should be at least 250 words long.  <\/span>There will be no penalty for assignments that go longer than the suggested approximate word count.<\/i><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n
