Student 1-<\/b>This week, we explored the complexity of the cardiovascular, peripheral, vasculature, and lymphatic systems. We took a deep dive into the anatomy of these systems, the roles they play, and how to perform a proper assessment of these complex structures. There are many factors to keep in mind when performing an assessment of these systems. In this discussion, I will highlight some key points involved in assessing the structure and function of the lymphatic system.<\/span><\/p>\n

The lymphatic system consists of lymph nodes and lymph vessels, including the thymus, spleen, and tonsils. This system manages fluid and protein balance while working with the immune system to fight infections. Since lymph nodes are often an early warning sign of infection, it is important to begin by assessing the patient from head to toe, as lymph nodes are found throughout the body. <\/span>Assessment<\/strong> <\/span>is always the first key step to remember.<\/span><\/p>\n

During this assessment, we gather both subjective and objective data regarding the condition of the lymph nodes. Here are five key points to keep in mind while assessing the lymphatic system:<\/span><\/p>\n

Size<\/strong>: Noting the size of the patient\u2019s lymph nodes is crucial to the assessment. This can be done through observation; if the lymph nodes are significantly swollen, they may protrude slightly. Palpation can also be used to assess lymph nodes. Lymph nodes that are tender, swollen, or warmer than usual may indicate infection.<\/span><\/p>\n

Consistency<\/strong>: Along with size, it is equally important to note the consistency of the lymph nodes. The consistency can provide clues to potential health issues. For instance, rubbery lymph nodes could indicate lymphoma or cancer.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mobility<\/strong>: Lymph nodes that are hard, immobile, swollen, or rubbery can be signs of an underlying health condition.<\/span><\/p>\n

Tenderness<\/strong>: Patients who report pain or tenderness in the lymph nodes may be experiencing an infection. These patients should be further assessed to rule out more serious conditions.<\/span><\/p>\n

In summary, these systems are highly complex and require close attention to detail during assessment. While these five points are crucial for evaluating the lymphatic system, it is essential to follow the steps of the nursing process from start to finish.<\/span><\/p>\n

Student 2-<\/b>This week we discussed how to go about assessing the heart and cardiovascular system. Some of the biggest points I took away from this module were what nodes are supposed to be heard, where all the points of auscultation of the heart are, the many abnormalities or conditions that can arrive from cardiovascular deformations, and the symptoms of said conditions. The function of the cardiovascular system is widespread and complex.<\/span><\/p>\n

5 Key Points of Structure and Function of Cardiovascular System<\/strong><\/p>\n

1. <\/strong>The cardiovascular system is composed of the blood, vessels, heart, and the lymphatic system. Although most people assume the cardiovascular system think solely about the heart, the blood and vessels play an essential role as well. <\/p>\n

2<\/strong>. The function of the cardiovascular system is to provide the body with the blood needed. The heart pumps the blood all throughout the body in order for the tissues to receive nutrients and oxygen. <\/p>\n

3. <\/strong>Assessments of the cardiovascular system frequently include asking about family history of heart or vascular conditions. Because many cardiovascular diseases are genetic, knowing whether you are at risk for certain conditions can allow you to take preventative actions to avert development. Some of these conditions include cardiomyopathies and hypercholesterolemia (Family History<\/i>, n.d.).<\/p>\n

4. <\/strong>Auscultation of the heart is a vital step in assessing for health status. Murmurs and bruits can be a big indicator of problems developing internally within the heart itself or its vessels (Realizeit for Student<\/i>, n.d.). <\/p>\n

5. <\/strong>Assessing skin perfusion is also an important part of the assessment process. Simple clues like skin color and capillary refill can be immediate signs that there is something wrong with the circulation of the body. Further assessments and tests should be done if identified, but this can be a great indicator if immediate action needs to be taken.<\/p>\n
