While many studies have shown a high correlation between better mental health and better diet, those terms are still vague and there are many niches and kinks left to work out. \u201c<\/span><\/p>\n

WP2 asks you to perform a literature review on a food themed topic. I assume this means to write a review on topics such as food safety or recipes. I am excited about this because one of my passions includes food but I don’t know if I entirely understand the topic. I believe I am going to focus on the effect certain foods can have on you psychologically. I am a psych major and have a passion for my work so I always try to fit psych in where i can. <\/span><\/p>\n

I know some foods, such as chicken, make your brain produce happy chemicals, and I would like to research that further to see if any other foods produce this effect. I will try to pursue a more scientific approach on this writing project than I did on my last one. My semester is going well, I enjoy my classes and understand the material well. For this course, however, I have found it very easy to stick a part of my personality into the writing projects and work we must complete. I love being able to make my work truly my own and this class allows me to do that well.<\/span><\/p>\n

Writing Project 2: Literature Review Essay  <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

A literature review is a critical assessment of existing scholarship on a particular topic. In it you summarize and synthesize existing research in the field to <\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  • assess the value of the research already done by others<\/li>\n
  • identify prevalent trends<\/li>\n
  • discover what research remains to be done in a particular subject area.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    You are NOT writing an original argument supported by outside sources.  <\/span>NOR should your paper simply be an annotated bibliography (a reference list with summaries of each source). A literature review essay combines summaries of each source, analysis of text from each source, and synthesis of sources.  <\/span><\/p>\n

    Literature reviews are written in all disciplines.  <\/span>In addition to helping you to become a more informed researcher in a specific aspect of your field, writing a literature review develops your skills as: (1) a researcher\u2014How efficiently can you find and obtain relevant articles or books on your research subject? and (2) a critical evaluator\u2014How effectively can you evaluate sources to find credible ones?  <\/span>Remember, you are only as credible as the sources you cite. <\/span><\/p>\n

    For this assignment you will:<\/b><\/p>\n

      \n
    • Choose a food-themed topic of interest to you that you would like to learn more about.<\/b>  <\/span>You will be using secondary sources (and one interview if you\u2019d like) to learn more about your topic.<\/li>\n
    • Use the library databases<\/b> to familiarize yourself with available scholarship on your topic.  <\/span>Read around. Don\u2019t try to read everything, but do look at both recent research and foundational works. <\/span><\/li>\n
    • Once you have a sense of the scope of scholarly research on your subject, narrow your focus.<\/b> Do this by determining how you can better understand your topic with the sources you find.<\/li>\n
    • Determine your research question.<\/b> What question are you looking to answer through your research? While you don\u2019t need to have an argumentative thesis for WP3, you\u2019ll be developing insights about what can be learned from the sources you find.  <\/span><\/li>\n
    • Begin your research in earnest. You are to find between 5-8 texts focused on your topic<\/b>.  <\/span>The sources you select must fit the following criteria:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      • At least 2 sources must be scholarly journal articles<\/li>\n
      • At least 2 of your sources must be found on the CSCC Library Database (library.cscc.edu)<\/li>\n
      • One of your sources may be an interview you conduct<\/li>\n
      • One of your sources may be a website on your topic<\/li>\n
      • One of your sources may be a podcast, video, or documentary<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        Note: Remember that the librarians at CSCC can be very helpful in finding sources.  <\/span>Consider using the chat feature on the library page, or you may email the reference librarians at refdesk@cscc.edu<\/p>\n

        • To find at least 5 usable sources, you will probably need to find\/read 8-10.  <\/span>Not all will be relevant (for reasons we\u2019ll discuss in class).  <\/span>Do not limit yourself to sources that just support your opinions on the topic.  <\/span>You will need to have a comprehensive understanding of your subject, and to do this, it\u2019s good to look at sources that examine a variety of perspectives. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

          NOTE: You\u2019ll want to (1) examine bibliographies for reoccurring names, which can lead you to key researchers in the field and (2) scan sources for titles cited repeatedly, which can lead you to key texts in the area.  <\/span><\/p>\n

          • Take notes on your sources.<\/b>  <\/span>Note the date, scope, initial hypothesis, research methods, and procedures, supporting sources, and ultimate findings. Compare and contrast these elements to assess how the studies are related.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
