Walking into my first class of senior year, Securities and Investments, I thought, \u201cJust another class with just another basic teacher.\u201d Mr. Anderson was standing outside the classroom, I walked in and saw no one, I knew no one. All of my friends were in separate classes, it was just me.<\/span><\/p>\n

He started the class immediately after the bell rang by telling us, \u201cOk, class, let\u2019s go outside.\u201d Instead of just doing a regular old lecture, Mr. Anderson teaches outside and around the school. I was immediately hooked: to me, a class where I didn\u2019t have to sit in a rock-hard chair for 90 minutes every other day seemed thrilling. However, it wasn\u2019t just the outdoors that intrigued me, but the content: investments we can make throughout our lives, and how to benefit from the stock market. I was attached; I was drawn to business; I was drawn to the financial aspects, technological aspects, all the aspects of a business. Finally, a class that I yearn to be in, a class about the inner workings of the stock market and business.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mr. Anderson taught me to keep an open mind when doing anything new, from joining a new class to researching a stock. That mindset has led me to new opportunities, such as volunteering for Wells International Foundation to create clubs. Now, whenever I\u2019m feeling apprehensive about something new, I remember how much I ended up loving Mr. Anderson\u2019s class, and do my best to change my apprehension into anticipation.” <\/span><\/p>\n

My aspiration to engineer new technologies and programs that can produce more sustainable
\nfutures derives from two influential people: my father, an engineer who first taught me how to read
\nblueprints and apply principles of physics and mathematics to building increasingly complex
\nmachines, and Mr. Michael, my Physics instructor who taught me that experimentation is
\nfundamentally about experience and error and gave me the confidence to allow myself to make
\nmistakes and learn from the outcomes in the lab.
\nYet, perhaps the most impactful person in my life in recent years has been Mr. Anthony, who was
\nmy tenth and eleventh-grade English instructor. Before meeting him, I had never enjoyed literature
\ncourses because, no matter how much I loved reading, I was never asked to share what I thought
\nabout the texts assigned on our syllabus. As a science student, I was pigeonholed, and I
\ninternalized this critique by convincing myself that perhaps I did not have something to contribute.
\nMr. Anthony changed all this. He pushed me to give class presentations on my favorite texts and
\nengage in debates over the ethics of Frankenstein or the ideologies embedded in Never Let Me Go.
\nBesides helping me blossom as a writer and public speaker, he also helped me grow as a scientist
\nand engaged community member, as I routinely borrow his pedagogical techniques as a peer tutor
\nand feel I have worthwhile thoughts to share in writing and speech as a teammate, classmate,
