APA formatting, Literature Review-Master’s level<\/p>\n

The literature review is a summary and synthesis of the current thinking, knowledge and ideas related to a specific topic. It presents a comprehensive, clear and concise overview of relevant source materials. A good literature review will (a) discuss and present literature, (b) compare and contrast different ideas or theories and (c) explore trends related to their topic over time. Academic sources, or the literature, includes source materials that are (a) peer-reviewed articles published in scholarly and\/or professional journals, (b) chapters in edited books, (c) academic books or eBooks, (d) research reports, (e) conference proceedings, and (f) dissertations and theses. Students can find appropriate source materials through the databases available to all students via the Cressman library. Resources to guide and support students in completing a literature review are provided in Section 8 of the CP manual. Writing and scholarly support services are available to the student and are outlined in the CANVAS course shell. <\/span> <\/span><\/div>\n

Here you will <\/span>state<\/span> the key information that is out there about your topic. You will share the source materials that exist which helped you to address your research question. <\/span>It\u2019s<\/span> <\/span>a good idea<\/span> to <\/span>state<\/span> clearly what your bins are and how they relate to your topic. <\/span>Essentially, you<\/span> list out your topics in the order you will discuss them and give a broad statement linking them to your primary topic\/research question<\/span>.  <\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Generally, this<\/span> section will discuss your first \u201cbin\u201d or topic area<\/span>.  <\/span>You will start each section by introducing the concept (ex: what are you talking about)<\/span>.  <\/span>Be sure to provide a clear statement about what you will discuss, how it was considered historically and current thinking surrounding your topic. You may take information out of your annotated bibliography for this section BUT be sure that you connect the annotations so that the whole section flows together. You can do this by including transition statements and focusing on how the information that you present addresses the topic sentence of this section and\/or your research question (<\/span>ie<\/span>: what do these articles, when viewed together, tell you about the topic). The section should end with <\/span>a brief summary<\/span>.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

This <\/span>longer <\/span>chapter <\/span>(around 15 pages) <\/span>provides the reader with a thorough overview of the literature related to your primary topic areas. It should provide the reader with <\/span>the essential <\/span>information <\/span>that currently exists in the field related to your <\/span>research question<\/span>.<\/span>  <\/span>It is <\/span>a good idea<\/span> to think of 3-4 primary areas of focus and then to concentrate on presenting a deep dive of those content areas<\/span>.  <\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Start by introducing your topic<\/span>.  <\/span>Clearly <\/span>state<\/span> your research question and what you will discuss in the literature review.<\/span> The introduction should summarize the key topics you will present<\/span>, how they all fit together to address your question and the implications for clinical practice\/the field<\/span>.  <\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Subheading<\/span>s<\/span> can keep your work organized and cue the reader <\/span>into<\/span> the specifics about the topic. For <\/span>example,<\/span> you might have a general statement about response art. Then you might use subheadings to divide the discussion <\/span>into (a)<\/span> response art in general, <\/span>(b) <\/span>response art made during sessions and <\/span>(c) <\/span>re<\/span>sponse art in supervision. <\/span>Each <\/span>item<\/span> in the previous sentence would be a subheading under the topic of Response Art.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

This section is a synthesis of what you read\/reviewed<\/span>.  <\/span>Here you will make 3-4 key statements about your topic<\/span>. <\/span> <\/span>Statements may be presented together or with separated level 4 headings<\/span>.  <\/span>These statements need to be grounded in literature and relevant to your research question<\/span>.  <\/span>You will back <\/span>up each statement with the source materials you read (and you should have multiple sources for each idea\/area)<\/span>.  <\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Implications for the Field<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

In this section discuss what this review <\/span>indicates<\/span> to the practicing art therapist about your topic(s). <\/span>This section is a synthesis of what you read in your individual articles-it brings all the information together to present a clear, concise, statement about what your work tells the practitioner about the work of the art therapist.  <\/span>Be sure to focus on the field of art therapy.<\/span>  <\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

You will c<\/span>learly identify what key pieces of information emerged from your <\/span>literature<\/span> review that are applicable to practice.<\/span>  <\/span>Identify<\/span> how these ideas are currently informing <\/span>practice<\/span>.  <\/span>  <\/span>Identify<\/span> the <\/span>overall <\/span>suggestions that<\/span> <\/span>emerge<\/span>d<\/span> from your review<\/span> <\/span>about <\/span>continued or future practice<\/span>. Be sure these ideas are supported and that they<\/span> specifically relate to your research question and your topic area (often this<\/span> information<\/span> is in the suggestions\/limitations section of your articles)<\/span>. <\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Conclusion<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Finally, you summarize your overall literature review. <\/span>A good way<\/span> to do this is to (a) state your question, (b) re-state your key topic areas and how they related to the question, (c) summarize your key (biggest) bits of information related to the topic and (d) <\/span>summarize what this all has to do with the field<\/span>.  <\/span>You can do this i<\/span>n<\/span> about 5 sentences<\/span>.  <\/span>You then conclude by <\/span>stating<\/span> what you will do to address your <\/span>topic-<\/span>essentially what<\/span> is the intention of your artmaking process.<\/span> (ex: in the next section, I discuss my use of response art to better understand my internship site)<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
