\nLength: 650-820 words, excluding footnotes and bibliography
\nFor your research paper proposal, you need to introduce your research topic and analyze a
\nscholarly secondary source and a primary source.
\n\u2022 You need to number and write your answers in full sentence paragraphs. You also must
\ninclude the headings I have provided in the instructions below.
\n\u2022 You must cite all evidence with Chicago style footnotes. We will go over how to do this
\nbefore your assignment is due.
\n\u2022 The facts and evidence in your proposal must come from the sources that you list in your
\nChicago style bibliography.
\no It is the student\u2019s responsibility to ensure they are paraphrasing and direct
\nquoting their evidence correctly. It must be clear to me where your evidence
\ncomes from. If you do not cite your work properly, you may receive a failing
\ngrade.
\nResearch Paper Proposal Content
\n1) Historic Designation Topic (50-100 words)
\nInclude the title of your historic designation topic, the location of the plaque (if there
\nis one), and when it became a national historic designation. If your historic
\ndesignation topic is broad, describe how you will focus your research paper. For
\nexample, if the event is World War Two, you could suggest narrowing down the
\ntopic by focusing on women\u2019s roles in World War Two. The information in this
\nsection of your assignment needs to be cited with a footnote from your assigned
\nParks Canada website.
\n2) Topic Introduction (200-250 words)
\nDescribe your historic topic in detail. For this section, you need to make sure to
\ninclude the information below. All of your information in this section must be
\ncited with Chicago style footnotes.
\n\u2022 What person, event, and\/or historical facts are associated with your topic?
\n\u2022 What historical time period or year and specific location is relevant to your topic?
\n\u2022 What is the historical significance of your topic?
\n\u2022 Explain why you think this topic was selected by Parks Canada for commemoration.
\n3) Scholarly Secondary Source Analysis (200-250 words)
\nFor this part of the proposal, you need to discuss a scholarly secondary source (a
\npeer reviewed journal article or book) that you found that you will use for your
\npaper. You need to attach a pdf of the source to your assignment or provide a
\nPage 5 of 14
\nwebsite link. All of the evidence in this section must be cited with Chicago style
\nfootnotes.
\n*Canadian Encyclopedia and Wikipedia are NOT scholarly secondary sources.
\n\u2022 List the Chicago style bibliography entry of the source.
\na) What is the scholarly secondary source about? What are the main points of
\nthe article? What is the main argument of the source?
\nb) What kind of sources does the author use? Provide a specific example of a
\nprimary source or a secondary source that the article uses.
\nc) Provide your critical analysis of the source in 3-4 sentences. What does the source
\ndo well? What could they improve on?
\nd) Explain how you found the source. You need to be detailed and explain how you
\nsearched for the source, including what search terms and database you used.
\n4) Primary Source Analysis (200-250 words)
\nProvide an analysis of the primary source (a source from the time you are studying).
\nYou need to include a URL link to your primary source or attach a pdf file of the
\nsource to your assignment. All of the evidence in this section must be cited with
\nChicago style footnotes.
\n\u2022 List the Chicago style bibliography entry of the source.
\na) What is the primary source? Include the title of it, author, and date. If these are
\nnot known, you do not need to include this information. Provide as much
\ninformation as you can.
\nb) Provide a brief summary of the primary source. What do you learn about your
\nresearch paper topic from this source?
\nc) Does the primary source have any bias? Be specific and cite from the primary
\nsource.
\nd) Explain how you found the primary source. You need to be detailed and explain
\nhow you searched for the source, including what search terms and database you
\nused.
\n5) Bibliography:
\nRemember to include a bibliography on the last page of your assignment. You need to
