In the wake of the conquest, the region\u2019s wealthy<span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><em style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">hacendados<span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/em><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">(landed elites) imported more African slaves than anywhere else in New Spain. The trauma of the trans-Atlantic slave trade failed to eradicate African cultural heritage and traditions, which continued in many forms, but which are especially evident in Veracruz\u2019s food, song, and dance. The musical style of<span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><em style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">son jarocho<\/em><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span>(made popular in the United States by Richie Valens\u2019s recording of \u201cLa<\/span><em style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/em><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">Bamba,\u201d a traditional<span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><em style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">son jarocho<span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/em><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">song) developed from such Afro-Mexican traditions, as did the dances of<span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><em style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">el chuchumb\u00e9<span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/em><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">and the Veracruz style of<span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><em style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">fandango<\/em><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">, both of which are associated with the musical style. This music and dance also relate to the history of<span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><em style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">cimarron<\/em><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span>communities in Veracruz\u2013which is to say, run-away slave communities that resisted Spanish domination.<\/span><\/p>\n<div><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><strong style=\"font-weight: bold; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">For this project, students will explore the cultural history Veracruz, specifically<span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span><em style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">son jarocho<\/em><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span>music and the dances it inspires\u2013<em style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">el chuchumb\u00e9<span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/em>and<span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span><em style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">fandango<\/em>.&nbsp; Students will research elements of cultural history related to Mexico for the course HIST 3308: History of Mexico.
