Prominent figures such as Nicky Barnes and John Gotti demonstrate how systemic flaws can result in certain individuals escaping the full weight of the law, revealing the limitations of both legal processes and law enforcement. On the other hand, individuals like Luis “King Blood” Felipe and Stanley “Tookie” Williams faced outcomes that, while argued as justified, have also been labeled by many as cruel and unusual punishment. These cases raise profound questions about the nature of justice: What is true justice, and is the courtroom the best venue to find it?<\/div>\n

100-word response should challenge\/extend the following text:<\/u><\/b> <\/span>From the top of my head, I’m going to be doing the Zimmerman case because I remember when I was 10, it was very controversial. The reason it was so controversial was due to the race of the victim that was killed which he was an African American 17 year old teenager and the only reason why Zimmerman was found not guilty was his skin color, he’s a white individual. George Zimmerman was a hispanic neighborhood watch member, he saw this black teenager named Trayvon Martin walking to his house from a 7-eleven when it was rainy and hard to see. When Zimmerman saw the teenager, he immediately called the police saying that Martin looked like a “real suspicious guy” and stated that Treyvon didn’t belong in the gated community. Apparently, Martin assaulted Zimmerman and Zimmerman argued that he used “self-defense” and killed the teenager. After the incident, on April 11, 2012, George Zimmerman was charged with second-degree murder of killing Treyvon Martin. Zimmerman’s main defense was the “stand-your-ground-law”, meaning that the state law permits you to using deadly force in self-defense without even trying to retreat first. Over the course of two days and after 16 hours of deliberations, on July 13, 2013, a jury that contained six people stated that George Zimmerman was found “not guilty” on both charges including the manslaughter one. Almost all the elements that were mentioned in the instructions definitely impacted the case and the sentencing outcome. By far due to the fact that George Zimmerman was white, nothing really happened to him and he was found not guilty. I get the state law and stuff but Zimmerman’s story kind of didn’t make any sense and it was pretty absurd. I mean, we couldn’t have Martin come to testify and defend his position because he was killed by Zimmerman, so there was only Zimmerman to defend his point. I don’t think it has anything to do with Zimmerman’s socioeconomic status because the trial stated that Zimmerman didn’t even have money and that the state had to help pay the costs and trials are expensive. When the cops arrived due to Zimmerman’s call, they probably took his side of the story because Zimmerman is white and the majority of cops are white statistically speaking. I guess the jury perceived Zimmerman of having a moral responsibility of defending and looking after himself during the incident. There was so much public pressure during the trial because I’m pretty sure you can guess it, the public was thinking that Zimmerman was just getting his way due to his skin color of being white. Although, I suppose it wasn’t enough public pressure to make the biggest impact on the final verdict against Zimmerman. I still remember when I was 10 and a riot happened aftermath of the final verdict, the public went wild. If I was a judge, my honest final decision for Zimmerman would be guilty for second-degree murder for 20 years but eligible for parole.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
