Your audience has been identified as not necessarily experts in the field, so you should not assume familiarity with psychological concepts, theories or terminology. If you use specialist terminology, you should define the term first. You should also use a format that is appropriate for a report, presenting your material in an appropriate style and using the structure outlined above so that it is clear and concise. You do need to demonstrate that you have a good understanding of the debates in this area and that you are using evidence and theory to back up the claims you are making.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 5px 0px 15px; font-size: 1em; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">You may use sub-headings, which<span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 700; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">will<\/span><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span>be included in the word count. You can use non-textual elements if they help to convey your points, such as tables, graphs, figures or diagrams. However, words associated with figures will count towards the word count, so do make sure that any such elements serve a useful function in your report: do not include them just for the sake of it. The highest marks will still be possible for reports which don\u2019t use them. Week 2 and<span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span><a style=\"cursor: auto;\">Chapter 1<\/a><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span>present some of the ethical dilemmas of mental health service delivery \u2013 notably those concerning issues of liberty and confinement.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 5px 0px 15px; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><a style=\"cursor: auto;\">Week 3<\/a><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span>looks at some of the major criticisms of psychiatry by academics, from within the professions and by service users.<span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span><a style=\"cursor: auto;\">Chapter 2<\/a><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span>looks directly at the service-user movement.<span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span><a style=\"cursor: auto;\">Week 5<\/a><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span>looks at some of the negative experiences that people can have of being diagnosed, which might also help you answer this question.<\/p>\n<h1 style=\"margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 12px; margin-left: 0px; padding-right: 40px; font-size: 1.28571em; line-height: 1.5; cursor: auto;\">Presenting problems<\/h1>\n<div style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">\n<div style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"margin: 5px 0px 15px; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">The task requires that you consider the particular needs of people who have been detained under the<span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span><i style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">Mental Health Act 2007<\/i>. It is worth noting that many of the needs of this group will be common to others experiencing mental distress. You might want to focus particularly on either the experience of detention in hospital or the experience of prison, or you might choose not to confine your focus to only one of those. Whatever your chosen emphasis, your focus should be on how interventions aimed at the community level might be deployed to support the needs of those who have had experience of detention.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 5px 0px 15px; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">While you will not need to spell out the powers of the Mental Health Act in your report, it will be important that you demonstrate an understanding of the powers of the Act and their implications. Some of the details of the powers of the Act are set out in<span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span><a style=\"cursor: auto;\">Chapter 18, Section 2 \u2018The legal framework and the Mental Health Act\u2019<\/a>. Particular attention is given to the \u2018powers of detention\u2019 in<span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span><a style=\"cursor: auto;\">Section 2.1<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 5px 0px 15px; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">You might also consider some of the fears of detention that were raised by Fariha in<span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span><a style=\"cursor: auto;\">Week 23, Section 3.1<\/a><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span>and the related discussion about the damage that might be associated with involuntary detention, which might be relevant to your report.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 5px 0px 15px; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">The general issue of mental disorder and the criminal justice system is discussed in<span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span><a style=\"cursor: auto;\">Chapter 18, Section 3<\/a>.<span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span><a style=\"cursor: auto;\">Week 23, Section 5<\/a><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span>looks at the issue of mental disorder and the prison system.<span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span><a style=\"cursor: auto;\">Section 5.2<\/a><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span>looks at the impact that prison can have on people and the possible similarities with institutionalisation (discussed in<span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span><a style=\"cursor: auto;\">Week 3, Section 3.2 \u2018Institutionalisation and identity\u2019<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 5px 0px 15px; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">It is clear that experiences of hospitalisation and prison can be stigmatising in themselves. The role that stigma can play in mental health is discussed in<span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span><a style=\"cursor: auto;\">Week 5, Section 3.1<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 5px 0px 15px; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">Some of the material in Week 23 clearly suggests that experiences of prison can themselves be traumatic and might at least exacerbate issues and symptoms of mental distress. This might be something you want to emphasise. There is material in Block 2 introducing perspectives on the significance of trauma on mental health (see<span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span><a style=\"cursor: auto;\">Week 8<\/a><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span>and also<span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span><a style=\"cursor: auto;\">Chapter 6<\/a><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span>of the textbook).<\/p>\n<h1 style=\"margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 12px; margin-left: 0px; padding-right: 40px; font-size: 1.28571em; line-height: 1.5; cursor: auto;\">Activism and the significance of community<\/h1>\n<div style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">\n<div style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"margin: 5px 0px 15px; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">You should demonstrate that you have a good understanding of the issues that are raised in Block 5. You are being asked here not to think about interventions and treatments that are aimed at individuals but to consider the social context of mental health. This means thinking about not only how social conditions might cause or exacerbate mental distress (<a style=\"cursor: auto;\">Week 24<\/a><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span>and<span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span><a style=\"cursor: auto;\">Chapter 19<\/a>), but the reciprocal relationship between good mental health and social conditions. Some of this material might help you think about how different communities might be more resilient than others.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 5px 0px 15px; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><a style=\"cursor: auto;\">Week 24<\/a><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span>provides a detailed focus on thinking beyond the level of the individual in theorising interventions to support mental health, with Sections 4.2, 4.3 and 4.4 focusing particularly on justifying the rationale for community-level interventions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 5px 0px 15px; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><a style=\"cursor: auto;\">Chapter 19 \u2018Individual or social problems?\u2019<\/a><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span>gives a detailed account of how symptoms of mental ill health can very often be understood as emerging from the social context in which people live.
