In essence, Adichie challenges us to<span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">think critically about stereotypical worldviews and emphasizes the importance of issues of identity.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 12px 0px; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">I often introduce students to the psychiatrist and philosopher Frantz Fanon when we discuss issues of identity.<span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">Fanon was born in the French West Indian colony of Martinique. He offered some of the most important writings on anti-colonialism struggle during the height of various efforts to end colonialism. Two of Fanon\u2019s most well known books are<span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><i style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">Black Skin, White Masks<\/span><\/i><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span>and<span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><i style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">Wretched of the Earth<\/span><\/i><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">. I encourage you to read both books if you have not done so already.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 12px 0px; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">Fanon offered memorable quotes. Here\u2019s one of my favorites:<span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">\u201c&#8217;<\/span><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">Each generation<\/span><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span>must,<span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">out of relative obscurity<\/span><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">, discover its mission, fulfill it, or betray it.\u201d Do you understand that quote?<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 12px 0px; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">In Fanon\u2019s work as a medical doctor (a psychiatrist), he noted that slavery, racism, and colonialism were at the root of nearly every problem ailing his black (people of African descent) patients, especially around issues of identity. Fanon also maintained that every person must ask and answer three fundamental questions in their pursuit of self-actualization:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 12px 0px; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">Who am I?&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 12px 0px; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">Am I really who I say I am?&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 12px 0px; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">Am I all I ought to be?<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 12px 0px; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">What is<span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><strong style=\"font-weight: bold; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">your<\/strong><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span>mission? What are<span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><strong style=\"font-weight: bold; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">you<\/strong><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span>doing to discover your mission? Or betraying it? That question is much more than your name and birthplace.
