Structure

\nwords; PhD Proposals about 8 -10 000 words.<\/span><\/p>\n

Here is one suggestion for the structure of the
\nproposal:<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

1.  <\/span>Title. <\/span><\/b>Keep it short and clear; make sure it clearly
\nindicates the focus of the research.  <\/span>You
\ncan\u2019t change the title after the acceptance of the proposal, without going
\nthrough a faculty procedure. <\/b>  <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

2.  <\/span>Introduction<\/span><\/b>.  <\/span>Provide
\nbackground and context to your particular focus.  <\/span>What is the general debate with which you
\nwill be engaging?  <\/span>Ask yourself what
\nbackground your readers need to know before they can appreciate your particular
\nfocus and contribution.   <\/span>Show that you
\nhave done your homework.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

3.  <\/span>The Question<\/span><\/b>. Here you focus down to the small corner of
\nthe general debate that you will focus on. 
\n<\/span>You need identify your focus and your research question.  <\/span>Be as precise and focussed as possible.  <\/span>Show how your concerns differ from other
\nrelated ones, or where you will depart from \u2018standard\u2019 theories and readings,
\nor where you will make a contribution to the area.  <\/span>Set out any sub-questions you will need to
\nexplore in order to answer your main research question.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

4.  <\/span>Importance of the Question<\/span><\/b>. 
\n<\/span>Why is your question worth answering? 
\n<\/span>What is its value and what will be gained by your spending time on it,
\nand by your readers engaging with it? <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

5.  <\/span>How others have answered the Question<\/span><\/b>. 
\n<\/span>What have others said in reply to the question?  <\/span>What are the main texts, theories,
\nauthors?  <\/span>You need to show that you done
\nsome research and can engage with the literature (to some extent, of course;
\nyou are not expected to have read everything at this stage).  <\/span>Make sure that you mention and discuss the
\nimportant or standard theories, views etc.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

6.  <\/span>Your (Tentative) Answer to the Question. <\/span><\/b> <\/span>As best as you can at this stage in your
\nresearch, set out your answers to the question, or suggest the direction you
\nthink you might go in. If you are not sure, let the reader know what your
\ncurrent thinking is, why you are unsure, and where you might end up. Try to
\nshow why you think your answer will make a contribution to the debate, and what
\nthat contribution could be. You are not expected to have worked your answer out
\nfully in the proposal.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

7.  <\/span>Outline of Sections.<\/span><\/b> 
\n<\/span>A brief outline, to show that the material can be coherently organised,
\nand to show that you have considered how that could be done.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

8.  <\/span>Bibliography<\/span><\/b>.  <\/span>List all
\nthe resources you mention in the proposal, and any others that you know you
\nwill draw on.  <\/span>Make sure that the
\n\u2018classic\u2019, frequently cited works are mentioned. <\/span><\/p>\n
