The
\nmargins for all sections of the capstone project are as follows: 1 inch at the
\ntop and bottom, 1 inch on the right side, and 1 inch on the left side.  <\/span>All text should be Times New Roman, 12-point
\nfont.  <\/span>Text within the body of the
\nmanuscript should be left justified.  <\/span>Double
\nspacing should be employed throughout the manuscript.  <\/span>Two spaces should follow punctuation marks

\nall be Arabic numerals and placed in the upper right-hand corner (with the page

Executive Summary<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/h1>\n

            <\/span>The executive summary is an overview of the capstone
\nproject and is the first section stakeholders will read.  <\/span>The executive summary includes the purpose and
\nrationale of the project, the problem statement, the methods, the results, and an
\noverview of the recommendations.  <\/span>Descriptions
\nof the methods should include the setting, data collection, and analysis.  <\/span>The executive summary should be approximately
\none page but must not exceed one page.  <\/span>The
\nfirst sentence is indented.  <\/span>The
\nexecutive summary should not include statistics, references, or direct quotes.  <\/span>Begin this section using the following format:\n<\/p>\n

The
\npurpose of this project was to (improve or solve) the problem of ________
\n(identify what needs improving) at ________ (identify site\/setting, and
\nstakeholders) and to design ________ (identify the project \u2013 professional
\ndevelopment, intervention, etc.) to address the problem.  <\/span><\/p>\n

Briefly
\nintroduce proposed data collection and data analysis strategies designed to solve
\nthe problem, followed by a general description of the project (curriculum,
\ntraining, program, etc.) and recommendations that will be developed to solve
\nthe problem. <\/p>\n

1.0<\/span> <\/span><\/a>Introduction to the Project and related Literature<\/span><\/span><\/a> <\/span><\/span><\/h1>\n

Overview<\/a><\/span><\/h2>\n

The Overview should begin with a brief restatement of the purpose of
\nthe capstone project.  <\/span>The purpose should
\nbe followed by a restatement of the problem statement.  <\/span><\/span>You will
\nthen clearly and concisely describe the contents and organization of the section.
\n <\/span><\/span>The purpose of Section 1.0 is to
\nprovide a framework for the evidence-based project.  <\/span>This paragraph should create reader interest,
\nprovide a foundation for the problem that necessitates the project, overview
\nthe context of literature in which the project is founded, identify the
\nimportance of the project for a specific audience, and briefly introduce the project.  <\/span>Section 1.0 must be a minimum of 25 pages for
\nthe final capstone project.  <\/span>Do not
\npropose a solution or possible solution to the problem prior to conducting the
\nresearch.  <\/span>For example, do not state that
\nprofessional development will be created to solve to problem before data
\ncollection and analysis. <\/span><\/p>\n

The Public Administration Setting
\nand Background<\/span><\/a> <\/span><\/h2>\n

The Public Administration
\nSetting and Background provides<\/span> context related to the problem.  <\/span><\/span>Begin by describing the public
\nadministration setting in which the problem will be addressed.  <\/span>In this subsection, the setting (or the site)
\nof the project should be described in detail (e.g., geographic location, governmental
\nagency, etc.).  <\/span>For example, you may say,
\n\u201cCity of Lynchburg Offices are located at 000 Main Street, Springfield,
\nVirginia.  <\/span>The local city government
\nserves 000 residents\u2026 and is\u2026.\u201d  <\/span>Give a
\ndetailed description of the particular governmental agency or organizational
\nsetting.  <\/span>Only important features which
\nhave bearing on the project should be included. 
\n<\/span>The following questions should be addressed: What does the organization
\nlook like with regards to leadership, organizational structure, population,
\netc.?  <\/span>Because the capstone project will
\nnot be published, you may include real site names and numbers in the setting subsection.  <\/span>Include cited sources in correct APA format
\n(e.g. Local, State or Federal governmental reports, county or city website, organizational
\nreports, etc.).  <\/span>End this subsection by
\nintroducing the reader to the problem and making a smooth transition into the
\nnext subsection.<\/span><\/p>\n

Introduction
\nto the Problem<\/a><\/span><\/h2>\n

This subsection introduces the
\nreader to the specific <\/span>governmental <\/span>problem of practice
\nand provides justification for the evidence-based project within a governmental
\nsetting.  <\/span>A problem of
\npractice is a situation that exists within a private or governmental
\norganization within the public administration setting. The problem is site
\nspecific, non-generalizable, and is unique to the particular governmental
\nsetting.  This subsection provides you the opportunity to show that the
\nproposed capstone project is needed and is relevant to the organization being
\nstudied.  <\/span>Focus on the problem to be
\nexamined and provide evidence that the problem is real and needs to be solved.  <\/span>Provide as much documentation as possible
\nwhen presenting the problem (e.g., school records, reports, documentation,
\netc.).  <\/span>Use appropriate APA citations.  <\/span>In a few focused paragraphs, convince the
\nreader why the particular issue or problem needs to be addressed.  <\/span>The problem should be stated clearly and
\nunambiguously.  <\/span>You should state: \u201cThe
\nproblem is\u2026.\u201d Do not propose a solution or possible solution to the problem.
\nThe solution to the problem will be addressed in Section 4. <\/span><\/p>\n

Significance
\nof the Problem<\/a><\/span><\/h2>\n

The significance of the problem begins with a description of the practical
\ncontributions that the project makes to the organization.  <\/span>It addresses questions such as, why does the
\nproblem need to be solved?  <\/span><\/span>Why it
\nis important to the location, organization, population, and\/or stakeholders?  <\/span>How will solving the problem improve the
\nconditions, lives, work environment, etc.?  <\/span>Identify the specific stakeholders who will
\nfind the project significant.  <\/span>References
\nbased in the literature are very important here to lend additional credence and
\nsupport the need for the study.  <\/span>All
\nassertions in this subsection need to be well supported by the literature.  <\/span>Citations are needed using correct APA format.<\/span><\/p>\n

Purpose Statement<\/a>
\n<\/span><\/h2>\n

The purpose of the project should flow from
\nthe problem statement and significance of the problem.  <\/span>Clearly and succinctly state the focus and
\nintentions of the proposed capstone project. 
\n<\/span>The purpose statement should begin with the following statement: \u201cThe
\npurpose of this project is to improve or solve the problem of\u2026.\u201d  <\/span>This statement foreshadows the central question,
\nand the statement must be used consistently throughout the project.  <\/span>Begin this section using the following format:
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

The purpose of this project was to (improve
\nor solve) the problem of ________ (identify what needs improving) at ________
\n(identify site\/setting, and stakeholders) and to design ________ (identify the
\nproject \u2013 professional development, intervention, etc.) to address the problem.  <\/span>It is important to solve this problem because
\n________.  <\/span>The first approach regarding
\ndata collection will be structured interviews with ________ (teachers,
\nprincipals, parents, etc…).  <\/span>The second
\napproach regarding data collection will be (documents; records; archival data;
\nsurvey; focus group; etc\u2026) _________ with\/using ________.  <\/span>The third approach regarding data collection will
\nbe (documents; records; archival data; survey; focus group; etc\u2026)  <\/span>________ with\/using ________.\u201d  <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Although brief in nature, the problem of the study and the purpose
\nstatement are very important aspects of the manuscript.  <\/span>These statements identify the goal of the capstone
\nproject and support the importance of solving the problem of practice.  <\/span>All preceding writing within the manuscript
\nshould funnel into the problem and purpose statements, and all proceeding
\naspects of the manuscript should align with, support, and further expand upon
\nthe problem and purpose statements.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Related Literature<\/a>
\n<\/span><\/h2>\n

This is often the
\nlongest portion of the capstone project. 
\n<\/span>The minimum page requirement is 20 pages, but it may be longer.  <\/span>In this subsection you will provide a context
\nfor the capstone project and demonstrate its importance based on related
\nliterature. The Related Literature subsection is comprised of an introduction
\nto the literature review and at least two subsections: (a) Narrative Review and
\n(b) Theoretical (or Conceptual) Review. A narrative review, also known as a
\ntraditional literature review, is a thorough analysis and synthesis of the
\ncurrent knowledge on a topic. Begin the Related Literature section with an
\nintroduction to the literature review section, which is followed by the
\nNarrative Review subsection and then the Theoretical Review subsection.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span>Subheadings at Level 2 are required and Level
\n3 and 4 are often necessary.  <\/span>Often 500 or
\nmore articles are read to construct this portion and a minimum of 40 sources are
\nintegrated into its construction.  <\/span>The
\nmajority of the literature cited should <\/b>be
\ncurrent (i.e., five years or less since publication), though it is understood
\nthat some seminal studies published more than five years ago are appropriate.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

Narrative Review<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/h3>\n

The purpose of this subsection is to provide a tight synthesis of the
\nexisting knowledge on this topic and link this existing knowledge to the
\nproposed project.  <\/span>This is not<\/i> simply a study-by-study summary, but
\na selection of relevant literate that covers a specific topic and related
\nresearch studies.  <\/span>As you read the
\nliterature, the information relevant to your project will need to be
\ncategorized into major themes which will be presented using headings arranged
\nin a logical order.  <\/span>It communicates what
\nhas been examined on the topic, what empirical studies have been conducted, and
\nwhat solutions have been implemented to address the problem.  <\/span>Remember, this subsection often convinces the
\nreader that you are an expert on the topic.<\/p>\n

Theoretical<\/span><\/a> Review<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n

This subsection should provide the reader with a direct connection to the
\nconceptual or theoretical framework related to the topic area.  <\/span>This subsection gives the reader a clear
\nsense of the theoretical approach to understanding the topic\/problem.  <\/span>Start by describing the theory(ies),
\nincluding origination and major theorist(s). 
\n<\/span>Next, discuss how the theory(ies) has advanced or informed the
\nliterature on your topic.  <\/span>Conclude by
\narticulating how specific theory(ies) may potentially help bring about a deeper
\nunderstanding of the problem.  <\/span>Examples
\nof theoretical frameworks include Marume (1988), Fox and Meyer (1995) five fine
\ntypes of administrative theory: Descriptive Theory, Prescriptive Theory,
\nNormative Theory, Assumptive Theory and Instrumental Theory. You must describe
\nthe relationship between the theory and your proposed study. <\/p>\n

<\/a>Summary<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/h2>\n
