Students select two different ethical decision-making
\nmodels to apply to the same ethical scenario (see below). Students
\ncritically analyse the strengths and limitations of each model (as
\napplied to the scenario client) to develop advanced knowledge of
\ncounsellor and psychotherapist responsibilities regarding ethical
\ndecision-making models and processes. Students demonstrate applied
\nknowledge in how to apply both models to a case study scenario. <\/p>\n
Students then critically evaluate the strengths and limitations of
\nchosen ethical decision-making models to guide counsellors to work with
\nethical, legal, and social sensitivity to meet professional
\nresponsibilities. Students should bear in mind jurisdictional
\nconsiderations in understanding ethical and legal dimensions. <\/p>\n

\n client, Sharon, is a 45-year-old woman who is seeking help for
\ndepression. During the initial phone contact, she asked repeatedly about
\n privacy and wanted assurances that the information discussed in the
\nsession was confidential. The client repeated this line of questioning
\nduring the first face-to-face session. <\/p>\n
\n she revealed that the source of her depression was the death of her
\nmother one year ago. Her mother had suffered from a combination of
\nsevere renal problems and dementia and was very difficult to care for.
\nSharon had been caring for her and her father in their home for 9 years
\nprior to her death, putting her teaching career on hold as well as any
\npossible romantic relationship. During the last two years, her mother
\nrequired total care. She revealed that she had been suffering greatly
\nand, out of compassion for her, she gave her an excess dose of her
\nsleeping and pain pills. Medical personnel never questioned the death,
\nas the woman had been quite sick and \u201cIt was only a matter of time.\u201d <\/p>\n
\n goes on to explain that she is now caring for her father in similar
\ncircumstances, although there is no dementia. Her father has declined
\nrapidly since the death of his wife and now requires total care. Sharon
\nreveals that recently she had a conversation with her father in which
\nthe father commented on how peaceful his wife\u2019s death was and how he
