Their presence was crucial in the maritime<br \/>\noperations of the era.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">Historical buildings reminding us of the<br \/>\nglorious maritime past of Birgu still exist, but nothing is reminding us of the<br \/>\ncontribution of the galley slaves who were part and parcel of this maritime<br \/>\nenterprise. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">Thus, giving life to the objective of this<br \/>\nstudy: How did galley slaves shape the historical narrative of Birgu\u2019s maritime<br \/>\nlandscape? If our experience of places is primarily visual, what might Birgu\u2019s<br \/>\nwaterfront teach us about galley slaves, that we have failed so far to include<br \/>\nin our tours?<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">This research seeks to provide a<br \/>\ncomprehensive understanding of the influence of galley slaves on the maritime<br \/>\nlandscape of Birgu during the 16th Century and the 17th Century, by identifying<br \/>\nthe historical places that have a direct or indirect relationship with these<br \/>\nindividuals and, consequently their work and lives within this context. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">The results of this research will be used<br \/>\nto create an eye-opener alternative tour of Birgu that will focus on a<br \/>\nlong-ignored facet of the maritime city and its history.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">The research draws on the works of local<br \/>\nand foreign historians including Cassar and Cassia( 2007), Muscat (2004)<br \/>\nWettinger, G. (2002) , Palmer, R. (2021) and Giorgio Scala and the Moorish<br \/>\nSlaves The Inquisition Malta 1598 edited by Dionisius A. Agius, who wrote about<br \/>\ndifferent aspects of slavery in Malta, including their roles and duties,<br \/>\nsocio-economic conditions and treatment, cultural interactions, and their<br \/>\ncontribution to maritime defense and trade.<span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;&nbsp;<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">Interestingly enough, even though several<br \/>\nhistorians have long recognized and valued the role of galley slaves in Malta,<br \/>\nthere is no single source dedicated entirely to the influence of the Moorish<br \/>\ngalley slaves on the maritime landscape of Birgu, by tracing their footsteps<br \/>\nand journey along the waterfront. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">Through an analysis of duties<br \/>\nsocio-economic conditions, and cultural interactions it becomes clear that the<br \/>\npresence of slaves played a pivotal yet often overlooked role in shaping the<br \/>\nmaritime and social landscape of the region during the Hospitaller period. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">While they were undoubtedly victims of a<br \/>\ncruel system their forced labour played a part in Malta&#8217;s naval achievements.<br \/>\nEconomic and cultural development on the islands was to some extent shaped by<br \/>\ntheir involuntary contributions (Capp, 2022).
