presented in other popular sources, including periodicals, websites, broadcast media,<\/span><\/p>\n

TED talks, or social media. Discover the parameters of the discussion and investigate<\/span><\/p>\n

the world-views of the various authors or speakers. Consider how prior values and<\/span><\/p>\n

practices inform their arguments. <\/span><\/p>\n

After establishing that there is a conversation on the topic, write a thesis-driven, four-<\/span><\/p>\n

page (approximately 1200-word) critical analysis of the conversation about the<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

technological issue you have chosen, in the course of which you make your own<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

argument.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Be fair. Just because you don\u2019t like a particular position on the topic doesn\u2019t mean<\/span><\/p>\n

that it doesn\u2019t have rhetorical strengths. Don\u2019t forget that you build your own<\/span><\/p>\n

credibility when you critically assess an argument rather than uncritically condemn it<\/span><\/p>\n

or blindly accept it.<\/span><\/p>\n

In order to develop support for your own argument, you will need<\/span><\/p>\n

to respond to <\/span>at least three <\/b><\/span>other voices in the conversation on your topic, in the form<\/span><\/p>\n

of non-scholarly sources (see attached list)<\/span><\/p>\n

CONCEPTUAL BACKGROUND<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Thanks to the expansion of both social media and traditional media channels, the<\/span><\/p>\n

availability of public opinion is wider now than ever. Yet the range of opinion most<\/span><\/p>\n

people are exposed to has, if anything, narrowed, as people insulate themselves from<\/span><\/p>\n

ideas that fail to align with their biases and are encouraged to make snap judgments<\/span><\/p>\n

about every large and complex issue. Clearly, a situation in which people<\/span><\/p>\n

communicate mainly with others who already share their views makes it difficult to<\/span><\/p>\n

engage in thoughtful conversation about pressing problems. In order to clearly<\/span><\/p>\n

understand and respond to the true positions of authors and speakers, we must<\/span><\/p>\n

actively interrogate the values and beliefs that shape their rhetoric. We can then<\/span><\/p>\n

formulate deeper and more thoughtful responses of our own.<\/span><\/p>\n
