HOW TO WRITE THE ESSAY<\/span>
Planning<\/span>
1. A good essay is a unity; all the parts fit. A clear plan of your argument will help<\/span>
you to find the best words to convey it and the most effective form with which to<\/span>
express it. Clear thinking and successful expression are always linked.<\/span>
2. Be aware of your topic. A clear aim is essential, with a firm grasp of your argument.<\/span>
This can be sketched out in headings that provide a map of your essay.<\/span>
3. Writing can clarify and improve thinking. At an elementary stage you may<\/span>
assemble words and constructions as if you were compiling a catalogue; as you<\/span>
advance in confidence and skill your statements will become more fluent, more<\/span>
coherent. So your plan should be general enough to allow for the development of new<\/span>
ideas, but exact enough to guide you in each stage.<\/span>
4. Planning your essay, then, is a fundamental part of writing, whatever language you<\/span>
intend to use. Good planning means effective writing.<\/span>
Putting it into words<\/span>
1. Writing is a special kind of communication. It involves you with a reader. When<\/span>
you speak you have a range of supporting skills – your tone of voice, your facial<\/span>
expression, your hands, a shrug of your shoulders. Above all, you can try different<\/span>
words until you are understood.<\/span>
2. When you speak you have a listener whose reactions help you to convey your ideas.<\/span>
Successful speech involves two parties, speaker and listener. In writing you also have<\/span>
two parties, writer and reader, but the relationship differs because the controls have<\/span>
changed. You no longer have the chance to repeat yourself, or to use physical gestures.<\/span>
3. You may not see your readers, but you must always anticipate their reactions. A<\/span>
good writer will always be able to put him- or herself in the reader’s position. The<\/span>
writer must, in fact, lead a double life, projecting himself into the reader’s role.<\/span>
4. It is important to remember that in writing you have only the words on the page.<\/span>
Therefore the words you choose and the arrangement you impose on them must<\/span>
reflect most accurately the point you want to get across. Avoid self-evident statements<\/span>
and sweeping generalizations.<\/span><\/p>\n

STRUCTURE<\/span>
Beginning<\/span>
Your introductory paragraph should contain a thesis statement, the one main point you<\/span>
will develop and support. The first sentences of your paper must serve two functions:<\/span>
a) they must lead up to your thesis statement, and b) they must provide enough<\/span>
context for a reader not familiar with the text to understand your remarks. The<\/span>
opening sentences usually also introduces the title and author(s) of the work to be<\/span>
discussed. A sentence like: \u2018In various essays Oliver Goldsmith and David Hume, two<\/span>
eighteenth-century British philosophers, argue that national identity is shaped by<\/span>
diverse factors\u2019 is to be preferred over a sentence like: \u2018Oliver Goldsmith and David<\/span>
Hume have differing views\u2019.<\/span>
Supporting paragraphs<\/span>
The main body of your paper will consist of paragraphs providing evidence to support<\/span>
your thesis statement. In each paragraph no more than one topic should be discussed.<\/span>
Each paragraph should end with one, or possibly two, transitional sentence(s)<\/span>
[\u2018linker(s)\u2019]. This will make the connection clear between one paragraph and the next.<\/span>
Sometimes a \u2018linking\u2019 word is helpful: a word used in the final sentence of one<\/span>
paragraph and repeated in the topic sentence of the next.<\/span>
Final paragraph<\/span>
In your concluding paragraph should sum up your argument and provide some final,<\/span>
strong evidence in support of your thesis statement. You should, however, avoid<\/span>
providing comments which are personal, colloquial or mere empty phrases. \u2018I am<\/span>
shocked by the ideas of Oliver Goldsmith\u2019 would be an inappropriate ending.<\/span>
References<\/span>
References to and quotations from texts should always be acknowledged, usually by<\/span>
means of a<\/span> <\/span>footnote<\/span>.<\/span>

In this course, you\u2019ll write a paper based on your own research, including coming up<\/span>
with your own research question. In this paper, you analyse a part of European<\/span>
culture using (at least) one of the methods you\u2019ve familiarised yourself with in this<\/span>
course. We take \u2018culture\u2019 broadly: it can be anything from food and beverages to<\/span>
classical music, from poetry to architecture, from film to political comedy. The link to<\/span>
\u2018Europe\u2019 is similarly expansive, and may include \u2013 in addition to culture produced by<\/span>
European makers \u2013 Hollywood films set in Italy, colonial travel writing from the \u2018heart<\/span>
of Africa\u2019 and representations of lunar Nazis (yes, there is a film based on this<\/span>
premise). If you are unsure about your topic or want to check, do approach your<\/span>
seminar lecturer.<\/span>
In addition to the object you\u2019re analysing and the method you\u2019re using to analyse it,<\/span>
you also need to think about the larger theme of topic of your analysis. You never<\/span>
analyse without an idea in mind of what theme you are speaking to. A sonic analysis<\/span>
of Beethoven\u2019s \u2018Ode an die Freude\u2019 (adopted by the EU as \u2018its\u2019 hymn) will help you<\/span>
make an argument on how this song exemplifies unity, for example; or a narrative<\/span>
analysis of the Eiffel Tower\u2019s reception helps you argue something on French<\/span>
identity. Your seminar lecturer will help you align object, method, and topic.<\/span>

Referencing<\/span>
You may use any referencing style, as long as you use it consistently. We<\/span>
