\nbegin the process of quality improvement? Hopp and Rittenmeyer (2021) indicate
\nthat armed with data, nurses use the best available literature to guide
\npractice. <\/span><\/p>\n

Your assignment this week will spark your
\ncuriosity about how nurse leaders spur change. You are probably aware of
\nproblems at work that you would like to review. Nurse leaders drive quality
\nimprovement processes. This week, we are asking you to use an evidence-based
\napproach to a problem.<\/span><\/p>\n

The problem should be related to leadership
\nand management concepts that we are studying in this course<\/span><\/b><\/em>.<\/span><\/strong> You can focus on best practice
\nguidelines, improving work environments, promoting safety, and\/or system
\nchange. Some examples of issues that require system change may be medication
\nerrors among nurses who work 12 hour shifts on your unit, or increased
\nre-admissions of cardiac surgery patients after discharge.  Other examples
\nmight be absenteeism among nurses on a particular care unit; or decreasing
\npatient fall rates in the ICU; or improving change of shift reporting among
\nnurses.  These are just a sample of the many types of problems that you
\nmight choose for this assignment.  Still, other examples or ideas may be
\nfound in Chapter 23 of your Huston textbook.    <\/span><\/p>\n

Directions: You will write a 1-3 page
\ndocument in APA format addressing each of the following items (#1-4). <\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

1. Identify a current problem (related to a leadership and
\nmanagement concept) within a health care work environment<\/span><\/i><\/strong> that<\/span><\/em> requires a
\nquality improvement initiative. Please
\nwrite a paragraph about the problem.  <\/span><\/b><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

2. Imagine you are asked to lead an
\nevidence-based initiative that addresses the problem. You are asked to develop a PICO question to narrow and
\nspecify your problem.<\/span><\/b><\/em> The PICO question will guide your search
\nfor the best available evidence. Here’s some helpful hints… <\/span><\/p>\n

The PICO elements needed for a good
\nresearch question are:<\/span><\/p>\n

P- population: be specific about that
\npopulation. As an example, if you are interested in retention rates of nurses,
\nbe as specific as you can about the population. Perhaps you are interested in
\nnewly graduated nurses’ working on a medical-surgical unit. Think about how
\nbest to describe the population? <\/span><\/p>\n

I- intervention- be specific about the
\nintervention your population receives. You will be searching for the highest
\nlevel of evidence in the literature. Remember, you are not doing a research
\nproject. Instead, you are trying to find the best available evidence to support
\na change and\/or quality improvement intervention.  Another thing to think
\nabout \u2013 is this a nurse specific intervention? Practice changes that involve
\nother stakeholders (managers and\/or inter-disciplinary team members) would also
\nrequire them to be at the table.<\/span><\/p>\n

C-comparison Who is your comparison group?
\nDid half the group in the study receive the intervention and the other half did
\nnot? The literature will tell you the answer. In the example of newly graduated
\nnurses, some interventions might be a formal orientation program, assignment of
\na mentor, or the establishment of a clinical ladder. Whereas, the comparison
\ncould be newly graduated nurses that did not receive the
\nintervention.  <\/span><\/p>\n

O- outcome what outcome do you want to
\nmeasure? Ex. retention rates on the medical surgical unit with intervention
\nversus without.  <\/span><\/p>\n

Here is an example of a well-written PICO
\nquestion addressing a hand hygiene practice initiative: What is the
\neffectiveness of offering mandatory training sessions (I) compared to posting
\nsigns in the hospital (C) on improving adherence to the hospital hand hygiene
\nprotocol (O) among nurses in the ICU (P)?<\/span><\/p>\n

Make sure to write your PICO question in
\nthe assignment. Label the parts of the question to receive all points. <\/span><\/i><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

3. Search for a minimum of three (maximum
\nof five) research (scholarly) articles published within the last 10 years that
\nrelate to the chosen problem. Note: Focus on higher levels of evidence whenever
\navailable.  Use
\nAPA format to reference each article at the end of your assignment. <\/span><\/b><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

4. Summarize and synthesize the evidence as it relates to your
\nquestion. <\/span><\/i><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

a. Summarizing<\/span><\/b><\/em> your article means that you
\nare articulating general findings in your own words for each of the three (3) articles cited on your
\nreference list.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

b. Synthesizing<\/span><\/strong> is applying the findings
\nto the problem you have identified in step 1. <\/span><\/p>\n
