The module HOUP009\/11<\/b> Housing reflection aims to
\nbring master\u2019s level learning and link it into professional practice.  <\/span>This portfolio is based on four separate sets
\nof assessments that lead those taking the module to be a fully rounded
\nreflective practitioner.<\/p>\n

The
\nportfolio is to be made of 4 elements. These include:<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Literature
\nreview –<\/span><\/b> This is an in-depth exploration of the literature and the links<\/b>
\nto your housing practice and report topic<\/b> (5,000 words<\/b>).<\/p>\n

Practice
\nreport<\/span><\/b> –<\/span>
\nThis is a reflective project that will employ your research skills and link <\/b>them
\nto working practice (5,000 words<\/b>).<\/p>\n


<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Reflective
\nexercise –<\/span><\/b> This report explores reflective theory<\/span><\/b>, and you own learning
\njourney and experience of writing the essay and the practice report (2,500
\nwords<\/b>).<\/p>\n


<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Reflective
\ndiary –<\/span><\/b> You will keep a diary of your learning and housing practice
\nthroughout the module (2,500 words<\/b>).<\/p>\n

These should all be in one document with a cover page<\/b>
\nintroducing each section.<\/b> each part of the portfolio is a separate piece
\nof work, but they are connected around your topic and research focus.<\/b>
\nAssignments should, where appropriate, include examples from practice and
\nshould demonstrate how practice is informed by knowledge and values.  <\/span>You may find this over-view video from Vikki
\non the reflective portfolio helpful too.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

1.   <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/b>Literature
\nreview<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

This essay will comprise a 5,000-word<\/b> critical review
\nof the literature around your chosen topic.<\/p>\n

The
\nliterature review should explore:<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

\u00b7      
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Concepts and\/or theories<\/p>\n

\u00b7      
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Definitions<\/p>\n

\u00b7      
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Explore examples of housing practice in the
\nliterature<\/p>\n

Relevant literature should be identified as soon as
\npossible. There are lessons to be learned from other work, even if it is not in
\nthe housing field. Students must establish who has worked in that field, what
\nhas been learned, and build off that work to understand their own housing
\npractice. Relevant literature about the issues and about research methods
\nshould therefore be identified in this essay. 
\n<\/span>Later, the literature should be used in more detail to determine fieldwork
\ninstruments for the practice report. This task requires you to engage with the
\nacademic literature e.g. housing journals, books, key policy reports.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Your literature review should have a clear<\/b> essay-type<\/span><\/b> structure
\nwith an introduction, main body and conclusion that keep a central narrative
\naround your key topic. This should complement the focus and research question
\nthat you plan to explore in the practice report. <\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

You might find it helpful to consult the general ‘literature
\nreview’<\/b> page for further support including videos on searching the library
\ncatalogue and general writing guidance.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

2. Research Project<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

The research report should critically examine an aspect of housing
\npolicy <\/b>or practice demonstrating research and analytical skills.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

If the student is on the internship route<\/b>, this will
\nform the internship report that is required for the finalising the
\ninternship.  <\/span>If the student is not on the
\ninternship route, this is a report that can be directly linked to their work
\npractices.<\/b><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The student is encouraged to do this work in the context of
\ntheir work environment so that they can reflect (in elements 3 and 4) on the
\nexperience of doing a bit of work for a  <\/span>housing audience. This exercise is designed as
\na smaller-scale dissertation that aims to give you experience and practice with
\nthe research process but centred on practice.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Planning<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

This section shows the issues that research students should
\nconsider in planning a project. In particular each student must complete a
\nproposal form (see Canvas) showing their aims, methods, literature they have
\nconsulted etc to their supervisor. You should generate this at the beginning of
\nthe module and discuss this with your supervisor. To generate such a plan,
\nstudents need to anticipate the following:<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Background<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

The context for the issue to be researched \u2013 history,
\nlegislation, policy background, identifying likely investigation or reports and
\nindicating the likely sources of literature, published and unpublished, texts
\nand electronic. Having to summarise the key issues to contextualise a research
\nproject is a valuable exercise in itself and helps to order your thoughts. Your
\nsupervisor might ask you to prepare a review of the literature on your topic at
\nan early stage to encourage you to be clear about the scope for you to make a
\ncontribution beyond what is already known. 
\n<\/span>Students must make full use of the University library and electronic
\nresources for searching material.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Aims<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

\u00b7      
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>This section should specify clearly the
\nprincipal, overarching aim of the project (This might serve as the basis for
\nthe eventual title.) Such a question needs to be thought about and expressed as
\nan open question. Alternatively, it can be couched as a hypothesis, to be
\ntested. The key question should be broken down into secondary objectives each
\nof which could be made real through the methods used in the research.<\/p>\n

\u00b7      
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Aims need to be achievable when it comes to the
\nnext section on choice of suitable and appropriate methods. In this case the
\nmethod section would need to show collection and analysis of trends in
\ncomplaints at local offices, with the student having thought about whether
\nthese would be available to them in the timescale required.<\/p>\n

 <\/span>Method and design<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

\u00b7      
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Students need to decide what type of approach
\nwill to enable the stated objectives to be achieved (for example, a structured
\nquestionnaire survey, depth interviews, or a combination of methods). Projects
\nmay use a mix of desk survey and social survey, structured or unstructured data
\ncollections. Specific research aims determine which data sources are important
\nand relevant to the project, how they are planned and used. It is important
\nthat students only collect data directly concerned with the problem.<\/p>\n

\u00b7      
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>This section should explain the design deemed to
\nbe most appropriate for the project, after due consideration of the options.
\nThe options eventually chosen should be informed by reading about social
\nscience research methods, drawing on recommended reading. For example, the
\ndesign should deal with the boundaries of the area to be covered, definition of
\nterms, the agencies, or individuals to be consulted, assessments to be carried
\nout, whether or not to conduct a survey of what, why and at what point in the
\nresearch. The synopsis should show the range of sources of data in existence
\nand those to be collected, bearing in mind the available resources. Remember
\nsome approaches to data collection may simply not be achievable within the time
\n\/ resources available through pilot approaches could be useful in themselves in
\ntesting the efficacy of a method or approach.<\/p>\n

\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Students should record their thoughts about
\nwhich methods to use and what implications they have as these will be useful
\nlater when writing up the methodological discussion about the research.  <\/span>You may find it helpful to consult the

Think back you your experience of doing a consultancy report
\nin HOUP003, and try to focus the report for a housing audience<\/p>\n

3. Reflective exercise.<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

This report explores reflective theory and your own learning
\njourney and experience.<\/p>\n

The main thing to just remember is your reflective report
\noutlines the general reflective theory \u2013 you are looking at the different
\nmodels that we have introduced to you in HOUP001 and in these MSC materials
\n(see also handout \u2018Reflective practice Theory and Reflective Practice
\nLiterature Reading List). You are then to take one (or a few) of those models
\nand use the process to reflect on your experiences. You can draw on the following:<\/span><\/p>\n

\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Your current work environment<\/p>\n

\u00b7      
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Your internship (if appropriate)<\/p>\n

\u00b7      
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>The experience of writing the essay and the
\npractice report.<\/p>\n

\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Your experience of completing the Housing
\nStudies Diploma<\/p>\n

Think about:<\/b> what happened, what you learned, how it
\nmade you feel, and your impact on others, what you plan to change in the
\nfuture. To take this to the next level, you can then discuss and be critical of
\nthe reflective theory – like how they don\u2019t apply or miss something etc that is
\ngood. If you think back to your HOUP003 links exercise that could help you
\nthink about your critical engagement.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

4. Reflective diary<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

You will keep a diary of your learning and housing
\npractice throughout the module<\/u><\/b>. For your diaries try to pick out key
\nlearning experiences to reflect on in-depth. Using the pro-forma in your MSc
\nshared space you then describe what have and then reflect on how this made you
\nfeel, your impact on others, and how the experience will change your housing
\npractice.<\/p>\n

For your diary you can pick one of the models that you
\nexplored in your reflective essay and apply it into more in-depth
\nscenarios\/experiences in your diaries. (see the \u2018How do you learn\u2019 and \u2018who do
\nyou think you are\u2019 handout).<\/p>\n

Reflective Diaries<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

 <\/span>Keeping a diary is a
\nuseful way of recording your work and reflecting on the learning points. The
\nreflective element in particular can be used in writing the self-reflection
\nelement of the report. The required format for diary pages here. <\/p>\n

\nentries recording one or two work activities during the week and reflecting on:<\/p>\n
