This course has been examining various ways music relates to cultural, social, societal, and political issues. For the semester\u2019s final writing assignment, you will <\/span>choose <\/span>three (3)<\/u><\/strong> <\/span>different types of music we have discussed this semester.<\/strong> <\/span>For each one, <\/span>briefly describe that type of music and discuss in detail how it relates to cultural, social, societal, and\/or political issues<\/strong>. For the details you use in the essay, take information presented in the course lectures and readings, and add some additional details taken from other sources. <\/span>Oxford Music Online<\/a> <\/span>should have entries about some genres covered this semester, and you can use other online sources for additional information about the music genres you choose.<\/p>\n

Then, at some point in your essay, <\/span>answer the following two questions<\/strong>: (1) <\/span>Before this class started, how did you feel music and culture related with each other<\/strong>? (2) <\/span>Now, near the end of this course, how has your understanding of music\u2019s relations with culture changed? <\/span><\/strong>Note that <\/span>these two questions connect with the above section on how 3 types of music relate to cultural and political issues<\/strong>. In your essay, <\/span>briefly discuss how the two sections relate with each other<\/strong> <\/span>(for example, perhaps one or more of the music genres you choose changed your perspective about music and culture). <\/span>Also note: You can choose where to include the discussion of these questions in your essay. You can put it at the beginning, end, or somewhere else, whatever makes sense to you.<\/em><\/p>\n

Finally, work diligently to <\/span>organize your essay well and to use correct grammar, spelling, in-text citations, and a Works Cited section<\/strong>. Your essay should involve an engaging opening that sets the stage for the main topic(s) you will discuss. It should transition well between sections and involve a conclusion that sums things up. Maybe you want to discuss one music genre at a time, discussing both the music characteristics and how it relates to cultural and political issues. Maybe you want to follow some other organization scheme. Proofread your work to fix spelling and grammar mistakes. Include sufficient in-text citations to indicate where your information comes from, and put a Works Cited section at the end, following APA, MLA, Chicago, or another citation method (you choose a citation method and be consistent with it).<\/p>\n
