Purpose <\/p>\n
We are going to explore the rise of non-communicable, chronic disease and why this is of concern to public health. As you have learned this week, though, there is so much more at play than simply the “biologic derangement of normal body functions” being called “disease”. For this activity, you can use whatever platform you’d like to create a mind map – it can be hand drawn, too. <\/p>\n

Each of you is grouped by last name and will have a topic to explore listed below.<\/p>\n

What is the issue? Summarize it in your own words
\nProvide some stats on the issue (2-3 from reputable sources)
\nAre there different people or groups of people affected by it?
\nProvide a map of the disease using the biomedical model as an example:
\nEtiology (disease’s cause)
\nDiagnosis (how is it diagnosed? lab tests, medical screening\/exam, observation, etc.)
\nIntervention or treatment (what is the action taken to improve health – medication, surgery, etc.)
\nProvide a map of the disease using the biopsychosocial model:
\nBiological (what are the components of it linked to our biology? genetics, psychology, gender, age, vulnerability to stress, immune system, nutrition, medications\u200b, etc.)
\nPsychological (what contributes psychologically to the issue? beliefs, emotions, resilience, coping, emotional intelligence, cognitive biases, behavior, self-efficacy\u200b)
\nSociological (what contributes sociologically to the issue? family, relationships, peers, poverty, school, media, culture, work, stresses, traumas, discrimination and racism\u200b)\u200b
