Harvey (2020) argued that the \u201cfinancial side\u201d of the economy has gained power and influence over the \u201cphysical side,\u201d and that this power has negative effects for quality of life under capitalism. Similarly, Varoufakis (2019) demonstrated that banks both rely on the state to provide infrastructure and demand that the state bail them out when\/if they fail.  <\/span>Finally, Lewis provides a case study of Michael Burry, a stock trader who was able to take advantage of the state\u2019s lack of control of the 2008 financial crisis.<\/p>\n

To different degrees and for different reasons, all of these texts argue that people\u2019s quality of life would improve if democratically run governments intervened in the banking sector on the people\u2019s behalf.
