\nassessing possible approaches to addressing the Israeli-Palestinian

\nand Palestinians might move towards a peaceful resolution of their conflict \u2013
\neither temporary or more permanently \u2013 given the ongoing crisis that began with
\nHamas\u2019s October 7, 2023 attacks on Israel. 
\n<\/span>Your paper should consider this terrorist attack, Israel\u2019s military
\nresponse and ongoing war on Hamas in the Gaza strip, the resulting humanitarian
\ncrisis in the Gaza strip, and the broader international crisis this has
\nprovoked. <\/span><\/p>\n

Your proposal should be
\nbased on course readings and lectures (including Professor Burstein\u2019s and
\nGhaith al-Omari\u2019s guest talks).  <\/span>You do not
\nneed to do additional research. <\/u><\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

Use your previous paper as a
\nstarting point, and drawing on our course review of other wars, peace
\nagreements, and ongoing conflicts \u2013 identify the key opportunities and
\nobstacles to achieving a peace agreement. 
\n<\/span>Once you identify these key opportunities and obstacles based on our
\ncourse review of the history of the Arab-Israeli conflict, reflect on how they
\nmight have changed or how they might have been reaffirmed by the current war
\nand resulting crises.<\/span><\/p>\n

Your paper should
\nspecifically address each of the following:<\/i><\/u><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Borders:  <\/span>should there be a one-state or two-state
\nsolution?  <\/span>In either case, where should
\nthe borders be drawn?  <\/span>1967 green-line?  <\/span>1949 armistice agreement?  <\/span>Some other set of borders?  <\/span>What should happen with Gaza?<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

–      
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Security:  <\/span>how should security be handled?  <\/span>For a two state solution \u2013 for Israel and
\nPalestine each.  <\/span>In a one state solution,
\nfor Israeli Jews, Israeli Arabs, Palestinian Arabs, Christians.  <\/span>In either case \u2013 for neighboring nations.   <\/span>How might security be addressed with regards
\nto Gaza and Israel now?  <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Refugees:  <\/span>how should the issue of Palestinian refugees
\nbe handled \u2013 here focus on the \u201cright of return\u201d and UN Resolution 194.  <\/span>In a one state solution, how should Jews,
\nPalestinians, Christians be treated in terms of making that country their
\nhomeland?  <\/span>In either a one-state or
\ntwo-state solution, how would those millions displaced by the Gaza war be
\naddressed?<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Jerusalem:  <\/span>regardless of whether or not you propose a
\none-state or two-state solution \u2013 how should Jerusalem be handled?  <\/span>Should it be divided into Jewish and Arab
\nareas as it is now?  <\/span>Should it be
\ninternationalized?  <\/span>Etc.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

–      
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Leadership:  <\/span>considering the history of the conflict, how
\nwould you assess the current leadership of Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza in
\nterms of their capacity to get to some resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian
\nconflict (temporary or long-term)?   <\/span>What
\nkinds of leadership would be necessary to get to a resolution \u2013 think about
\nIsrael\u2019s politics, the future governance of Gaza, and the future of the
\nPalestinian Authority.<\/span><\/p>\n

Finally, your paper should
\nhighlight the differences in the Palestinian and Israeli narratives of their
\npast experiences with peace and conflict, and also consider contemporary
\npolitical realities for both Palestinians and Israelis.<\/span><\/p>\n
