Module learning outcomes:<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

1. Have a detailed understanding of the relationship between health and sustainable development. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

2. Have a deep understanding of sociological, cultural, economic, geographical and political determinants of health and health care<\/span><\/p>\n

3. Have explored global burden of disease, with a particular focus on factors underlying epidemiological trends in Non-Communicable Disease (NCDs)<\/span><\/p>\n

4. Be able to apply knowledge and understanding to consider solutions for health care challenges in their own health contexts and systems<\/span><\/p>\n

Individual portfolio (30%)<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Deadline Friday 22nd<\/sup> <\/span>March 5pm (Irish Standard Time). Submit via Brightspace (upload link to Padlet)<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

The purpose of the portfolio is to promote active involvement and ownership of learning, to demonstrate engagement with module components and support planning and progress for end of trimester essay<\/span><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

In your portfolio you will <\/span>describe a health challenge<\/i>, <\/span>summarise the underlying determinants<\/i> <\/span>or factors that contribute to this health challenge and <\/span>propose a solution<\/i>. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The \u2018tips\u2019 and template below gives further guidance on how the portfolio (and essay) may be structured. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The assessment rubric for the portfolio is set out in the section below, (Table 1)<\/span><\/p>\n

Individual Essay (70%)- Word limit: 2000 words<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Deadline Friday 10th<\/sup> <\/span>May 5pm (Irish Standard Time). Submit via Brightspace<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

The essay should build on the work that you have prepared for your portfolio. However, if you wish to focus on a different topic, you may do so. Be mindful of the time and effort burden involved in beginning a new topic.<\/span><\/p>\n

The proposed template below gives further guidance on how the essay may be structured. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The grading criteria for the essay are also set out below, (Table 2)<\/span><\/p>\n

Some \u2018tips\u2019 for preparation for the portfolio<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

A template for how you may organise the portfolio which you may find helpful is set out below. To approach the project in a systematic way it may be helpful to follow the following basic steps.<\/span><\/p>\n

a. Firstly –decide on the health challenge<\/i> <\/span>that you are going to research. Be as specific as possible- for example, what is the topic? What is the context will you focus on? (e.g., local, national, global); is there a specific population (children, mothers, people with disabilities).<\/span><\/p>\n

Think about what resources will you use to \u2018set the scene\u2019. – e.g., Research papers, reports, websites<\/span><\/p>\n

b. Try to <\/span>get a general understanding<\/i> <\/span>of the chosen health problem. Review papers and other resources. <\/span> <\/span>Link\/upload the resources to your padlet and summarise key points\/ synthesise findings from your resources.<\/span><\/p>\n

c. Once you have undertaken the initial research and synthesized findings in your portfolio, it is a good idea to begin to <\/span>\u2018map out\u2019 a proposed solution<\/i>. Include evidence to underpin your proposed solution. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Proposed Template for Portfolio and Essay<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Below is a template that you may find helpful when planning your group presentation and individual essay<\/span><\/p>\n

1. Describe the health challenge. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Define the problem\/ identify need. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Set out current practice – This may be local, regional, national, or global.  <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Describe the impact of the health challenge. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Use data and evidence to \u2018set the scene\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n

2. Summarise the underlying determinants or factors that contribute to this health challenge, (e.g., sociological, cultural, <\/span>economic, geographical, and\/or political factors)<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

3. Consider a solution. See below some aspects that you may consider when proposing a solution<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Clearly state aims and objectives- (what do you want to achieve?).  <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Who are the stakeholders?<\/span><\/p>\n

Implementation plan- Describe the key actions. Have similar programmes been set up in different contexts? Is there evidence to support your solution?<\/span><\/p>\n

Consider the sustainability of your proposal. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

How would you measure success?<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
