Begin your discussion with the rise of preservationist and conservationist ideologies, the debates between then and the \u201cbattle\u201d over Hetch Hetchy.  What was the result? (15 pts)<\/span><\/p>\n

Second, discuss environmental changes<\/span> <\/span>in the early 1900s, with industrialization, associated urbanization and immigration, and the western frontier.  <\/span>(<\/span>2<\/span>0 pts)<\/span><\/p>\n

Next, discuss the \u201cLong Fifties\u201d in America (approximately 1945-1963).  What were the effects of WWII, the subsequent Cold War and the post-war culture of affluence on the environment?  <\/span>Begin<\/span> <\/span>discussions of trash and nuclear weapons in this section<\/span>, which should continue through the next sections<\/span>.  <\/span>(15 pts)<\/span><\/p>\n

Discuss the \u201cGreen Decade\u201d of the 1970s.  <\/span>As a transition, discuss how<\/span> <\/span>the culture\/tenor of that time help<\/span>ed<\/span> <\/span>set the stage for the \u201cGreen Decade\u201d of the 70s?  What factors in society prompted the emergence of the large-scale environmental mov<\/span>e<\/span>ment(s) of the 70s?  When discussing the Green Decade, make sure to place it in <\/span><\/span>its proper context in relation to the larger social revolution<\/span>s<\/span> <\/span>of \u201cThe Sixties,\u201d as well as the larger evolution of thoughts\/activisms on the environment.  What were the results of the Green Decade?  (Positive? Negative?)  <\/span>(20 pts)<\/span><\/p>\n

Then, discuss the backlash against environmentalism in the 1980s, its causes and its results.  What new patterns, surrounding environmentalism, <\/span><\/span>have emerged since then<\/span>?  Discuss the emerging spectrum of opinions and activisms on the environment and the idea of environmental activism being pro-active or reactive, and give examples.  <\/span>(<\/span>1<\/span>0 pts)<\/span><\/p>\n
