Essay 3: The Research Paper<\/span><\/h1>\n

What it\u2019s all about<\/u>: For this, our last full essay in
\nCollege Writing, you\u2019re being asked to form an argument of your own, supported
\nnot only by your own observations, but also by sources you\u2019ve gone out and
\nfound yourself, using the library and its online catalogue and research
\ndatabases. Your topic may be anything you choose (barring the forbidden ones we
\ndiscussed in class), around which there are many controversial issues. By this
\npoint you should have picked a tentative topic, or at least a couple of
\ndifferent ideas you\u2019re interested in.<\/p>\n

            <\/span>In terms of
\nthis course, there isn\u2019t a \u201cright\u201d answer to the controversy, only your <\/i>answer
\n(which must nevertheless be well-supported by reasonable, authoritative sources
\nand sound reasoning)\u2014and you shouldn\u2019t be approaching the issue as if there is
\none; rather, enter your research with a question and then attempt to answer it.
\nNothing kills the effectiveness of a paper faster than coming at the topic with
\nan already-defined answer.<\/p>\n

What to include<\/u>: Your essay should include the
\nfollowing elements:<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

*An introduction which frames the relevance and importance
\nof the issue to your reader<\/p>\n

*A strong, debatable thesis that explains your take on our
\ntopic and the reasons (based on research) that you believe it.<\/p>\n

*Support for that thesis in terms of reasoning, information,
\nand expert opinion (you will need to establish that expertise in your essay).<\/p>\n

*Ethical use and engagement of opposition\u2014in other words,
\nuse reasonable opposing sources, not \u201cwackos\u201d (we will establish what this
\nmeans in class).<\/p>\n

*Ethical refutation of said opposition.<\/p>\n

*A conclusion that ties your argument together effectively
\nfor your reader.<\/p>\n

Note: depending on your probable audience, you may alter the
\nstructure to match your rhetorical aims.<\/p>\n

Format<\/u>: 6-8 pages, typed and double-spaced, stapled,
\nin an acceptable font, with full and proper MLA documentation. Also, this time
\nthere are a couple more requirements: your essays need to include between 6-8
\nsources (more if you really think you need them, but do check with me). You
\nwill also be restricted to books and journal\/magazine articles from the
\nresearch databases\u2014I\u2019ll allow you the use of three, and only<\/i> three,
\nweb-only sources, so they had better be good, authoritative ones. This merely
\nmeans things that can be found by Googling your topic\u2014Google Scholar doesn\u2019t
\ncount and is perfectly acceptable. (And they may NOT be Wikipedia, nor any kind
\nof wiki or \u2018pedia.)<\/p>\n

\nanalyses its effectiveness on people and society in India. Once again this is
\nuseful for my paper as it gives another legal framework that is used, and how
\nthe local government in India is responding. Her analysis gives me a basis to
\nwhich I can discuss a middle ground of having a balance between freedom of
\nspeech and regulated censorship.<\/span><\/p>\n
