  • Study someone you know closely (observe a subject) using the knowledge gained in class and from readings\/evidence based resources.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Analyze what was observed using the assigned growth and development theory appropriate for the age of the person observed.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    • Select a person (subject) between the <\/span>age of 3 years and older (over 65 years)<\/strong>.<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Include your knowledge and observations of your subject in their natural environment.  This includes at home, daycare center, nursery school, playground, school, recreation center, job setting, or senior center.<\/span><\/li>\n
    • The observer (you) should not be directly responsible for the individual\u2019s care\/safety at the time of a direct observation activity.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      • Prior to your observation read about growth and development for the age group you will be observing.<\/span><\/li>\n
      • Use the Denver Developmental Screening Test or other standardized measures appropriate for the age of the person you have selected to observe to help focus your observation.<\/span><\/li>\n
      • Take paper, pen, and a watch with you for making notes and timing activities during the observation.<\/span><\/li>\n
      • Do not join in the activities as much as possible.  You are the observer.   <\/span><\/li>\n
      • Describe what you observe. Be as objective as possible write a rough draft of your observations immediately from your notes to be accurate and comprehensive as this will help you with writing your final paper.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        Guidelines for Writing the Paper<\/span><\/u><\/b><\/div>\n
          \n
        • Based on the observation of the person, write a <\/span>3-5 page<\/strong>, typed paper which describes the person\u2019s behavior.<\/span><\/li>\n
        • You should describe the subject\u2019s behaviors in relation to the following developmental areas: physical, psychosocial, and cognitive.<\/span><\/li>\n
        • You should analyze your subject\u2019s behaviors according to related developmental theorists from the assigned readings in your text, as appropriate for subject\u2019s developmental level e.g. CD growth charts for children & adolescents, adults, Erikson, Kohlberg, Mahler, Maslow, Neugarten, and Piaget.  (not all of these theories will apply to your subject).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
          1. Begin with an introduction that describes the setting in which the observations took place and  <\/span><\/div>\n
              individuals interacting with the subject.  <\/span><\/div>\n
          2. The first part of the paper should begin with a description of what the individual did during the<\/span><\/div>\n
              observation<\/span><\/div>\n
          3. Include the subject\u2019s estimated age, height, weight, physical appearance, actions, in the<\/span><\/div>\n
              verbalizations, emotions, type of play or activity in the way in which the subject related to<\/span><\/div>\n
              others and to objects and the environment                   <\/span><\/div>\n
          4. The second part of the paper should analyze the observation of the subject.  Compare specific   <\/span><\/div>\n
              examples of the person\u2019s behavior with the expected \u201cnorms\u201d for that age<\/span><\/div>\n
              group from the readings (text and\/or other references).<\/span><\/div>\n
          5. Keep in mind that depending on the age of the subject, some areas below may not apply.<\/span><\/div>\n

               a. What stage of psychosocial development was observed?<\/span><\/div>\n
               b. What is the critical task for the stage and how was it expressed in play and\/or interpersonal<\/span><\/div>\n
                   relationships?<\/span><\/div>\n
          3. Cognitive (Piaget)<\/span><\/b><\/div>\n
               <\/span><\/span><\/b>a. <\/span><\/b>What is the subject\u2019s stage of cognitive development?<\/span><\/div>\n
               b. How does the level of cognitive development influence the individual\u2019s behavior in: play,<\/span><\/div>\n
                   language, relations with others, etc. reading, problem solving<\/span><\/div>\n
          5. Object Relations (Mahler)<\/span><\/b><\/div>\n
               a. Where is the <\/span>young child<\/u><\/b> <\/span>in the separation-individualization process?<\/span><\/div>\n
          6. <\/span><\/span><\/b>Hierarchy of needs (Maslow)<\/span><\/b><\/div>\n
               a. Describe the subject\u2019s level of need according to the pyramid.<\/span><\/div>\n
               b. Analyze why the subject\/s is at the recorded level of need.   <\/span><\/div>\n
          7. Moral Development (Kohlberg, Piaget)<\/span><\/b><\/div>\n
