Sovereignty and Self-Determination: Native America from the Second Half of the Twentieth Century to the Present<\/span><\/p>\n

The second half of the twentieth century began with the threat of Termination and ended with Native people asserting their sovereignty. Termination prompted a vigorous response from Native Americans. Forging self-belief through activism, participating in pan- tribal organizations and movements, and advocating for the rights of Native nations, indigenous peoples have claimed their place in American society. At the heart of indigenous activism is sovereignty, and Native nations have tried to make that sovereignty real by practicing economic, cultural, and political self-determination. Legal activism, land claims, Indian gaming, and the repatriation of Native remains and artifacts have all featured prominently in efforts aimed at self-determination. In this exam you must explain the Native push for political, economic, and cultural self-determination beginning in the 1950s and extending to the present day, and the challenges to Native sovereignty by the federal government and the larger, non-native, American society.<\/span><\/p>\n

The citation instructions for this paper are unique to this assignment but they are part of the grade and must be followed.
