In your essay, you will want to address the following questions:<\/p>\n

  3. How does the author challenge previously established assumptions or arguments about the historical topic?<\/li>\n
  4. How convincing is the author\u2019s evidence?<\/li>\n
  5. How does the article contribute to your understanding of this period of African American history?<\/li>\n
  6. Consider how the primary sources you selected negate or support the journal article as you make comparisons or contrasts between the primary sources and the historical events, policies, or historical actions examined in the journal article.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Essays should include an introductory paragraph, several subsequent paragraphs, and a conclusion. Your first paragraph should identify the purpose of the journal article or (what assumptions the author seeks to overturn?) You can note in your introductory paragraph the previous assumptions associated with the historical topic. In your introduction also make a brief statement about the evidence the author uses to make their argument. For example, what evidence does Azaria Mbughuni use to argue that Tanzanian leaders played an important role in helping Malcolm X pass the OAU resolution? What evidence does Mbughuni use to support the idea that Malcolm\u2019s contact with Tanzanian leaders strengthened the connection between the struggles of African people in Africa and African Americans in the U.S.? Be sure to include several brief citations from the article, however you are expected to mostly write the essay in your words.<\/p>\n

    Lastly, you must utilize examples from two primary source readings to support your analysis of the journal article. The primary source readings you select may challenge the argument set forth in the article or support it. It is not necessary to quote the primary source documents in your paper, however, be sure to state the author of the primary source document and how the primary source challenges or negates the article. If you choose to quote from the primary source, do so briefly. Students are encouraged to review the instructor material provided in your course package on differences between primary and secondary sources. The journal article is a secondary source.
