Please write a 8-10 page (minimum) researched persuasive essay arguing a position on a play or short story listed on the syllabus.  <\/span>You need to expand paper one (on a play) or paper two (on short stories) into a research paper by discussing secondary sources (articles written by others on the plays\/short stories or on issues in the plays\/short stories. <\/strong><\/p>\n

Criteria:<\/strong>
To do well on this assignment, the final draft of your paper will need to<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

1. <\/span><\/strong>have a clear, thoughtful, and unmistakable <\/span>thesis statement <\/span><\/em>somewhere early on in the essay;<\/p>\n

2.<\/strong> <\/span>provide ample <\/span>support <\/span><\/em>for its major claims, in the form of facts and opinions from experts and your own observations about the text(s);<\/p>\n

3. <\/span><\/strong>quote and\/or paraphrase roughly eight good outside sources;<\/p>\n

4.<\/strong> <\/span>adhere to proper <\/span>MLA form<\/em> <\/span>throughout;<\/p>\n

5.<\/strong> <\/span>demonstrate good <\/span>organization <\/span><\/em>and clear <\/span>transitions<\/em>, with every sentence and paragraph in the essay clearly growing out of those preceding them;<\/p>\n

6.<\/strong> <\/span>use correct <\/span>grammar<\/em> <\/span>throughout;<\/p>\n

7.<\/strong> <\/span>be well <\/span>edited<\/em>, with a minimal number of <\/span>spelling<\/em>, <\/span>punctuation<\/em>, and <\/span>diction<\/em> <\/span>errors throughout;<\/p>\n

8.<\/strong> <\/span>come to me with <\/span>at least 8-10 sources<\/em> <\/span>created before or during the drafting of your paper (your essay isn\u2019t acceptable without these, and they\u2019ll need to adhere to the guidelines I\u2019ll give you soon); and<\/p>\n

9.<\/strong> <\/span>come to me with whatever drafts, outlines, and\/or organizational exercises you\u2019ve done to help produce your final draft.<\/p>\n

Additional Requirements and Pointers:<\/strong>    <\/em><\/p>\n

I can\u2019t accept your final draft unless I\u2019ve gotten from you, over the course of the semester, three important developmental documents:<\/p>\n

(1) your list of 8-10 sources   <\/strong><\/p>\n

(2) your 8 paragraphs on secondary sources<\/strong><\/p>\n

(3) your first draft<\/strong><\/p>\n

(4) your works cited page  (at the end of the final draft)
<\/strong><\/p>\n

Of the ten sources you read, eight should wind up quoted and\/or paraphrased in your paper, and so listed on the \u201cworks cited\u201d page at the end of your paper.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

You should write for <\/span>non-specialists<\/em>.  Any specialized terms you use or knowledge you discuss must be explained well enough that any readers who aren\u2019t expert in the field you\u2019re working in will be able to understand you. <\/p>\n

If between 10 and 15% of your final draft is comprised of <\/span>direct<\/em> <\/span>quotes from outside sources, that\u2019s good.  If, as you\u2019re working, it becomes clear you\u2019re going to deviate <\/span>significantly<\/em> <\/span>from that rule of thumb, you should talk with me about it.  (It\u2019s fine, though, if you wind up <\/span>paraphrasing <\/span><\/em>quite a bit beyond that 10 to 15%.)
