\nFinal Project for Graduate Students<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Note: <\/span><\/b>The
\nfinal project is only <\/b>for
\nstudents enrolled in this course as graduate students.<\/span><\/p>\n

Overview: <\/span><\/b>For
\nthe final project, you are to find and analyze a dataset and write up your
\nresults in a report (no longer than 10 pages double-spaced). The project is
\nintended to be an application of the skills you have learned in this course in
\na less structured setting than in an exam or a problem set. The steps required
\nfor the project include finding an appropriate dataset, conducting the
\nstatistical analysis, and writing up findings.<\/span><\/p>\n

Guidance:<\/span><\/b>
\nPlease post questions related to the final project on the Canvas discussion
\nboard or reach out to your assigned teaching assistant. There will be a sample
\nfinal project to provide guidance to students. <\/span><\/p>\n

I. Obtaining
\nData: <\/span><\/b>If you already have or found a dataset that you wish to
\nanalyze, then you may use that dataset for the final project. If you do not
\nhave a dataset, then you are free to analyze one of the datasets used in the
\nproblem sets or lectures that are posted on the course website.<\/sub><\/span><\/p>\n

II. Conducting
\nthe Analysis:<\/span><\/b> The statistical analyses do not need to be
\nexhaustive. However, the analyses should be appropriate to the research
\nquestion and the data type and adhere to the grading rubric.<\/span><\/p>\n

III. Writing
\nthe Report: <\/span><\/b>After conducting your analysis,
\nyou need to write up your results in a paper no longer than 10 pages
\ndouble-spaced, Times New Roman, 12-pt font. The 10-page length includes tables
\nand graphs but excludes the Works Cited page. Graduate students must include at
\nleast two peer-reviewed citations in the Works Cited paper, as the goal is for
\nyou to learn how to identify and integrate relevant outside sources into the
\ncontext of data analysis. Please upload the completed work in Word format so
\nthe teaching team could provide feedback as comments. Late submissions will
\nincur a 5-point deduction per each day late (i.e., a report submitted one
\nminute after the deadline (indicated on the syllabus) will be subject to a
\nfive-point deduction, a report submitted 1.5 days late will be subject to a
\n10-point deduction). No submissions will be accepted 10 days after the
\ndeadline.<\/span><\/p>\n

The text of your report should follow this format, with
\nrecommended page lengths and a brief description of what is expected:<\/span><\/p>\n

\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Abstract <\/span><\/i>(50-300
\nwords): Very short summary of the data, methods, and results<\/span><\/p>\n

2.   
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Introduction <\/span><\/i>(no
\nmore than 1 page): Briefly outline your research question and your reasons for
\nconducting the analysis.<\/span><\/p>\n

3.   
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Data
\nand Methods<\/span><\/i> (no more than 1-2 pages): Describe your dataset,
\nincluding the number and type of observational units in addition to the types
\nof variables used in the analysis. In addition, outline and explain the
\nstatistical techniques you are conducting.<\/span><\/p>\n

4.   
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Results<\/span><\/i> (approximately
\n3-5 pages): Present your findings from the data analysis using relevant tables
\nand graphs. Make sure to explain your results clearly rather than simply
\ncut-and-pasting tables or graphs.<\/span><\/p>\n

5.   
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Conclusion<\/span><\/i> (approximately
\n1-2 pages): Summarize your main findings, briefly describe the weaknesses of
\nyour analysis, and outline implications for future research.<\/span><\/p>\n
