Where both of<br \/>\nthe expecting parents are portrayed as being filled with happiness as the<br \/>\nanticipation for the birth of their child approaches. Also, their extended<br \/>\nfamily members are filled with joyful anticipation as they will be grandparents,<br \/>\naunts, and uncles soon. These depictions of the childbirth experience have been<br \/>\ncast for decades via television and in other forms of media in the United<br \/>\nStates. Yet, all cultures must figure out how to integrate and perform<br \/>\nchildbirth into their societies, and it can be significantly different than<br \/>\nwhat we in America are familiar with. In the book titled \u201cMonique and the Mango<br \/>\nRains\u201d, the author, Kris Holloway seamlessly illustrates through her<br \/>\nnarratives, how the culture of the village of Namposella, is harmful to the<br \/>\nwomen of Mali. <span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span>The universal biological<br \/>\nprocesses of pregnancy and childbirth vary differently across many cultures and<br \/>\nhealthcare systems, depicted by the contrasting experiences during pregnancy<br \/>\nand childbirth in Namposella, Mali, and the United States by the author Kris<br \/>\nHolloway.<span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 200%; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 200%; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">The pregnancy and childbirth<br \/>\nexperiences in the rural village of Namposella, Mali are archaic at best, with<br \/>\na bit of Western medicine thrown in. In Mali, their sole \u201cskilled\u201d provider, their<br \/>\nmidwife, Monique, had a sixth-grade education and several months of medical<br \/>\ntraining. She was their sole somewhat skilled practitioner who was birthing all<br \/>\nof the babies in their village. The location where these women had no choice<br \/>\nbut to give birth was in what they referred to as \u201c\u2026the birthing house\u201d,<br \/>\n(Holloway, 2007, p.9). Inside the birthing house, no formal labor room nor a<br \/>\nhospital bed existed, instead, there was \u201cjutting from the left wall and<br \/>\ndominating the birthing room was an immense concrete block that served as a<br \/>\ndelivery table\u201d, (Holloway, 2007, p.6).<span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<br \/>\n<\/span>The poor conditions of the interior of the birthing house were that it had<br \/>\na dirt floor and was a hot and enclosed place, with \u201c\u2026the smell of flesh, body<br \/>\nfluids, and leftover food\u201d, (Holloway, 2007, p.6). This place where lives were brought<br \/>\ninto the world, was an area where seemingly bacteria and infection were<br \/>\nprevalent and always existed along with the process of childbirth. The<br \/>\nequipment that Monique had to assist with childirth was kept in a dented trunk.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 200%; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 200%; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;(This is where I got confused as to how to do Block Style) I wanted to add her tools of the trade that Monique had, which was a plastic tub leaning on the side of a dented trunk in order tto cath the afterbirth (I needed to re-word this as it is too close to what the author of the book wrote) she also had some vials of medicine (nothing specific was mentioned throughout the book ) as well as syringes that she just pulled out of the trunk and administered &#8220;a shot&#8221; to the 17 year old woman Kadjouti because she was properly dialated and ready to give birth. The shot sped up Kadjouti&#8217;s contractions and her labor. Monique spoke to her with a mellow, tone and at times in long words (again described in the book)<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 200%; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 200%; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">The rest of this information below is what I used to attempt to pull together a quick first draft for peer review. The peer review from the other students are not very good.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 200%; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 200%; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">Before<br \/>\nassisting the expectant mother with giving birth, Monique did step outside and with<br \/>\na hot teapot of water and some soap, with \u201c\u2026a minute of splashing and she<br \/>\nreturned, shaking her hands dry\u201d (Holloway, 2007, p.7), to wash her hands in an<br \/>\nattempt to ensure the cleanliness of them. There were no Western medical methods<br \/>\nof sterility or sanitation, nor the use of any tools of the trade such as<br \/>\nrubber gloves. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 200%; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 200%; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 200%; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 200%; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">Holloway<br \/>\ndescribed how difficult it was for these women, having to go through painful<br \/>\ncontractions and the process of labor. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 200%; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 200%; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 200%; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">For<br \/>\nexample, Monique would give the delivering mothers a shot to speed up the<br \/>\nbirthing process. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 200%; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 200%; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"background-color: var(--color-6); color: inherit; font-variant-ligatures: inherit; font-variant-caps: inherit;\">They&nbsp; Monique, with them while she coached each expectant mother through<br \/>\nthe difficult delivery of their child.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 200%; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 200%; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">The<br \/>\nexpecting mother seemingly goes through labor and contractions a bit easier<br \/>\nwith Monique\u2019s help and support. Although there are many challenges of<br \/>\nchildbirth in Mali, there are beneficial aspects as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 200%; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 200%; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 200%; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">Unfortunately,<br \/>\nthere are more challenges and drawbacks of giving birth in Mali than benefits. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 200%; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 200%; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">Several<br \/>\nchallenges are limited access to an appropriate amount of food, skilled medical<br \/>\ncare, a lack of healthcare infrastructure, inaccessibility to much-needed<br \/>\nmedical supplies and equipment, and high maternal and infant mortality rates. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 200%; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 200%; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">A<br \/>\nsignificant risk factor that increases drawbacks during pregnancy and<br \/>\nchildbirth is that the women in Namposella, Mali are malnourished. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 200%; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 200%; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">Culture<br \/>\n&#8212; After pregnancy and immediately after childbirth, they still were expected<br \/>\nto perform all aspects of caring for their large families without any time to<br \/>\nrest, and with no assistance from the males in their village. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 200%; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><b style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 200%; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><b style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">The<br \/>\nbenefits<\/span><\/b><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"> of<br \/>\nchildbirth for the women in the village of Namposselli were that they had<br \/>\nMonique and each other. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 200%; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 200%; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">Monique\u2019s<br \/>\nuse of a few aspects of <span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span>Western medicine<br \/>\nkept most childbirths from becoming fatal. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 200%; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 200%; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><s style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">Another<br \/>\nbenefit of childbirth in Mali is the impact that the author had on the women in<br \/>\ntheir village. Holloway obtained money from the USAID, an American government<br \/>\nagency, to help pay for the much-needed repair of the birthing house.<\/span><\/s><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 200%; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">The<br \/>\nstark differences surrounding childbirth in the United States with the accounts<br \/>\nfrom Holloway about giving birth in Mali are eye-opening and thought-provoking.<br \/>\nChildbirth experiences in the United States and Mali, West Africa, differ<br \/>\nsignificantly because of variations in cultural norms, healthcare systems,<br \/>\naccess to resources, and socio-economic factors. The comparison and contrast<br \/>\nbetween childbirth vary greatly. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 200%; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 200%; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">In<br \/>\nthe United States, typically childbirth occurs within a well-developed healthcare<br \/>\nsystem, with access to Western medicine technologies and skilled healthcare<br \/>\nprofessionals. In the culture of the US, women have many options as to where<br \/>\nand how they want to give birth. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 200%; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 200%; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">It<br \/>\ncan be done in hospitals, birthing centers, or at home with the assistance of<br \/>\ncertified nurse-midwives. Whereas the women in Nempossali do not have modern<br \/>\nmedicine technologies, hospitals, or skilled professionals. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 200%; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 200%; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">They<br \/>\nhave no choice as to where and how they want to give birth. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 200%; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 200%; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">The<br \/>\nonly place they have in Nempossali is the dilapidated birthing house or during<br \/>\nthe rains in the huts where they live. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 200%; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 200%; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">Monique,<br \/>\na midwife, who only attended a few months of training, is the only person who<br \/>\nassists the women of this village through childbirth. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 200%; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 200%; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">With<br \/>\nprenatal care, in the US pregnant women often receive regular thorough<br \/>\nexamination and review throughout the entire pregnancy. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 200%; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">The<br \/>\npregnant women in Mali, do not have access to any of this. <span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span>The lack of food and prenatal care made<br \/>\npregnancy life-threatening and difficult for these women in Mali. Holloway<br \/>\ndescribes the appearance of many of the pregnant women in the village as very<br \/>\nthin and often bony as they did not have enough nutritious foods to bolster<br \/>\nthemselves, or their unborn children. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 200%; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 200%; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">Many<br \/>\nfactors such as poverty, cultural norms, and inadequate healthcare systems<br \/>\ngreatly contributed to disparities in maternal health outcomes in Mali; which led<br \/>\nto high rates of mortality for both the mother and child. The differences<br \/>\nbetween childbirth in these two countries are significant. It highlights how each childbirth experience that<br \/>\nthe author has given us insight into, exposes the realities of this process for<br \/>\nother women around the world.
