In our third section of the course this semester I am assigning you a written paper to be due on the day of our final exam. The written assignment is based on the assigned book, The Rise of Fascism: History, Documents, and Key Questions. That book includes a timeline of events, an historical overview, an encyclopedia section, a set of primary documents from the period, and the last section is made up of three major questions about the age of Fascist Dictatorship.
\nI am asking you to describe the rise of fascist dictatorship in Europe during the period from the end of the First World War (1918) to the beginning of the Second World War (1939). In describing the development of fascism I want you to emphasize its development in Italy and Germany. I want to you to answer the following questions in your description:
\n1. What were some of the important conditions that contributed to the development of Fascism?
\n2. What exactly IS Fascism and how do we define it?
\n3. How did Mussolini and Hitler come to power?
\n4. Why did the rise and expansion of the Fascist dictatorships lead to war?
\nPlease make your paper 6-7 pages in length, double spaced, using 12 point type, and standard margins. Use the resources in the Rise of Fascism book to help you answer those questions above. Please feel free to use the primary documents as well in your written explanations.
\nAs for citations, anytime you use ideas from the book, or anytime you use a direct quote from the book, you must cite that in your paper. You may do this by just adding parentheses at the end of your sentence\/quotation etc. with the page number.
\nExample:
\nThe kind of nationalism that characterized fascism, according to Zander, can be called “exclusive nationalism,” which focuses upon preserving the political, cultural, and the racial integrity of the national community (Zander p. xxv).
\nYou can certainly use other sources as well, if you want to, (though this is not required) but again if you reference ideas or use direct quotes, they must be cited in parentheses after the sentence.
