So, it doesn\u2019t work to just show me that you have read the assignment (or watched the video or<\/span><br style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18.4px; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">such) by repeating back to me what the basic gist of the content was; I already know what the article or<\/span><br style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18.4px; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">video is about. I\u2019m looking for something that shows that you understand the implications and relevance<\/span><br style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18.4px; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">of what you have read\/seen. Connected to this, I am also looking at how well you can tie the lessons of<\/span><br style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18.4px; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">one task to things you have learned from previous assignments and readings, and how well you can bring<\/span><br style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18.4px; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">in relevant outside experiences and materials.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: var(--page-margin); cursor: auto; color: inherit;\" data-loaded=\"true\" aria-label=\"Page 2\" data-page-number=\"2\">\n<div style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: 1; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18.4px; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">I strongly advise against any form of plagiarism. \u201cPlagiarism\u201d is defined as the appropriation of any other<\/span><br style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18.4px; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">person\u2019s work and the unacknowledged or improper incorporation of that work into one\u2019s own work<\/span><br style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18.4px; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">offered for credit. All forms of academic dishonesty, including but not limited to cheating on tests,<\/span><br style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18.4px; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">plagiarism, collusion, and falsification of information, will call for discipline. It is the student\u2019s<\/span><br style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18.4px; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">responsibility to understand what constitutes dishonesty and the College\u2019s disciplinary policy toward<\/span><br style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18.4px; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">academic dishonesty.<\/span><\/span><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><\/span><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><br style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18.4px; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">I also very strongly advise against using AI apps, such as ChatGPT or Google, to write your turn-in for<\/span><br style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18.4px; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">you. Put simply, AIs don\u2019t think; they collect pre-existing information, run it through pre-set algorithms,<\/span><br style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18.4px; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">and create a summary. Which means that all they are doing is summarizing previous people\u2019s<\/span><br style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18.4px; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">information \u2013 including outdated and incorrect information. At the level you are now at, in college, you<\/span><br style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18.4px; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">will quickly discover that AIs such as ChatGPT are very prone to errors \u2013 or really just don\u2019t give you<\/span><br style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18.4px; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">much. Think of it this way: Why use an AI to put together what previous experts had to say on a topic<\/span><br style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18.4px; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">when, instead, you could do the work yourself towards becoming one of the new, cutting-edge experts on<\/span><br style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18.4px; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">the topic?<\/span><\/span><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><\/span><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><br style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18.4px; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">A suggestion: Please write and edit your Discussion and Assignment postings in a word processing<\/span><br style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18.4px; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">program, using the spelling checker and grammar checker functions. Then copy and paste the finished<\/span><br style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18.4px; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">product into the D2L editor and make final adjustments to it before posting. There is a straightforward<\/span><br style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18.4px; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">percentage point system. I (consistently) start with a base grade of 75%. You then gain points for<\/span><br style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18.4px; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">noticing things mentioned in the article or video, and for putting things together. Thus, for example, \u201cAh,<\/span><br style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18.4px; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">you caught that Selam predates Lucy; that gains you 7%.\u201d Or, \u201cNice! You noticed and brought in<\/span><br style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18.4px; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">reference to the new archeological findings in Uzbekistan reported in the newspapers yesterday, and tied<\/span><br style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18.4px; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">that in. Put simple, I am not interested in what others<\/span><br style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18.4px; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">have to say about the topic. I\u2019m interested in what you have to say about what others have to say about<\/span><br style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18.4px; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">the topic, as a demonstration of your comprehension of things. Of course, in order to talk about what<\/span><br style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18.4px; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">others say, you need to tell me what they said.
