Instructions: The
\nterm paper will examine a contentious issue in the CJS, and more importantly<\/span>, the nature of<\/span> <\/span>the contest or the types
\nof arguments being made on any side of the contest. Ideally, we would<\/span> <\/span>look beyond the
\n“two sides” debates and try to find a broad raft of opinions on some
\ncontested<\/span> <\/span>issue, although at a minimum two sides would be su<\/span>fficient, so long as their statements are<\/span> <\/span>thoroughly analyzed.
\nWhile I will allow for significant deviation from the proscribed scope, the<\/span> <\/span>idea here is to<\/span> <\/span>not<\/span> <\/span>write a conventional
\nterm paper (i.e. a deep dive into some topic) but rather, I<\/span> <\/span>would suggest yo<\/span>u would be well served adopting a social
\nconstructionist stance and examine the<\/span> <\/span>claims<\/span>–<\/span>making practices in
\neither scholarly or popular discourse on your chosen topic. Present a summary
\nof the contentious issue in question<\/span> <\/span>and where appropriate
\ninclude reference or commentary from appropriate criminological<\/span>

\n<\/span>theories. Evidence
\nyour analysis thoroughly<\/span> <\/span>–<\/span> <\/span>i.e. find<\/span> <\/span>actual statements to
\nanalyze and make<\/span><\/span> <\/span>clear reference to them through your analysis. Suggesting
\nsome author\/scholar\/group has made<\/span> <\/span>some argument without
\nevidence will result in grade loss.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The
\nterm paper should not exceed 12 pages, 12pt Times New Roman font,<\/span> <\/span>d<\/span>ouble spaced, one
\nspace between paragraphs, conservative use of headings, one<\/span>–<\/span>inch margins<\/span> <\/span>all around, no cover
\nsheet, page limit exclusive of bibliography. At this stage, you are expected<\/span> <\/span>to use no fewer than 12
\nscholarly sources (scholarly books, journal<\/span> <\/span>articles, book
\nreviews, etc.<\/span> <\/span>NOTE: News articles and\/or popular media are not scholarly
\nsources and do not count toward<\/span> <\/span>your quota, although you
\nmay be expected to reference them for factual materials anywa<\/span>y)<\/span><\/p>\n
