Your first question will be: What changes do you see in this urban area? What do you see as the most significant period or periods of change? Why did it change in the way that it did? And, finally: What might be the consequences and meanings of these changes? Use your course readings and also your own independent research to tell this story.<\/p>\n<p style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">To help structure your paper and presentation, I\u2019d like you to pick three significant <i style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">places <\/i>or sites within your neighborhood that you see as illustrative of the important historical changes you\u2019ve identified. These can be existing landmarks or monument, but they can also be unmarked places or just urban forms (e.g. a tenement house, a park, etc.).<\/p>\n<p style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><u style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">Format: <\/u>This paper should be 9-12 pages (double spaced, 12pt font). Please use Chicago Style footnotes and include a bibliography listing the sources you used. Please follow our same high standards of sources that we\u2019ve discussed in other papers (no junk websites can be used\u2014no websites that do not have footnotes.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><u style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">Approach. <\/u>You must use at least three secondary sources, and at least four primary sources. Primary sources are sources produced in the time period you are analyzing (newspapers, maps, diaries\/letters, published records, etc.). Secondary sources are books and articles published after the fact (e.g. a 2022 book about Boston\u2019s 19<sup style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">th<\/sup> century North End). You must also VISIT the neighborhood at least once. Does your neighborhood have a historical society or museum that you could potentially use to inform your research?<\/p>\n<p style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">Though seemingly small, a neighborhood history can easily grow in scope and scale. Boston is an old city with global connections, and each of these neighborhoods contains multitudes. A successful paper will likely focus on a <u style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">common theme<\/u> to create a more concise and coherent analysis of the urban space you\u2019ve been assigned.
